if the Saiga AK's go for $300 an the gun shop let's me would it be good to trade in my WASR-10 AK-47 for a Saiga AK-47? since they are usually in the same price.

A $300 Saiga is not what you'd call an "AK47" unless it has been converted by someone like Arsenal, inc or RedJacket firearms.

Thats why they are inexpensive. They don't accept hi cap ak mags without alteration, nor do they accept stocks, grips and other things you'd want an AK to have.

They are imported legally from the Izshmash plant in Russia as "sporting" models so they are allowed to retain their original chromelined barrels and riveted recievers.

I can however say that the Saiga is THE starting point for a top quality AK and if you'd like to do the work yourself or send it to a qualifed gunsmith, then have at it.

Other wise you'll have to (like me and many others) pony up $900 or So for a converted model by Aresenal, etc...(both of mine ar Arsenal SGL-21-66 models).

Keep the WASR.
Converting the saiga will take mucho dinero, and if you don't convert it, you just have a so-so looking 7.62 rifle with limited aftermarket support.

Not even then! The Saiga uses a smaller AK-74 bolt head and carrier...it will never be even a semi version of the 47. Basically, they reamed out 5.45X39 bolt. Many also have a nice litte step in the chaimber, none have a bullet guide from the factory.

Gen. M. Kalashnikov himself is so un-involved in production these days, he was not even told the russian army cancled the orders for the 74's:

"News of the army's decision is reportedly being kept from the rifle's designer, Mikhail Kalashnikov, now 91.

"We do not want to take it upon ourselves to tell him," an unnamed member of his family told Russia's Izvestia newspaper.

The flip side is the Siagas have a good reputation for being accurate, but if your the type who like to fill the rifle full of sand ( which I do not), shake it off and fire...good luck, the accuracy is due to tighter tolerances in the '74 version.

WASR's ( even used) go for more money than the (unconverted Saigas), that is why they MIGHT let you trade.

I would save up for the saiga if you want one so bad, you could always trade it later.;)

good info here. nothing wrong w/a WASR. don't let a snob tell you otherwise, it shoots just as good as any other AK. it just won't be as "pretty".

They didn't stop the orders because of quality issues or anything like that. It was because they have to many and want to wait to buy a new model when it comes out at the end of the year. Have you ever seen any bolt breakage issues? What does it matter if its a reamed out bolt if it does not cause any issues. There are not any reliability issues in the 74 version ether. I can assure you it will work when filled with a bunch of crap, not that you should do that anyway.

They are one of the nicest aks available.

all the saiga's sold around here from what troy at the gun shop said the stock's break cause its a thin hollow plastic "not synthetic" stock.

I guess that is possible, but I have never seen nor heard an instance of that happening. Did he mention any specific incidents or was it just an opinion?

It doesn't necessarily need to be $900, my SGL-21-61 was $750.
