Tracing gun ownership

Yet another question

I saw an article in the Chicago Tribune the other day (sorry I don't have it anymore) anyway, it said that every gun found or confiscated in Chicago is traced and sent to the FBI. My question is what good does that do? So they find a gun at a murder scene and trace it to the original owners, or all of the owners. What if the original owner bought it 90 years ago and the person is now dead? Is this also a form of registration? How could they know ALL of the owners of that gun if it doesn't have to be registered? I'm just not following, as usual. Funny, one quote was that "they KNOW where the guns are coming from in Chicago and plan on finding out about the rest of IL" Gee if you know where they are coming from and they are illegal guns why are you talking about it and not taking action? This makes no sense, handguns are illegal in Chicago to begin with.....something just isn't right, maybe someone can explain this to me. I *thought* that the FFL has the papers why does the FBI have this information.....and why the FBI and not ATF? Does this, in reality, mean that any gun bought in IL is registered? What about other states that are more gun friendly, do they do the same thing and trace all of them? What if they trace a gun back to an owner whose gun was stolen? Does the owner suffer from this?

Oops that was about 10 questions

OK, I'll take a shot at this.

When the Chitacgo PD confiscate/recover an eviiil gun (handgun or long arm) that has been used in a crime or was illegally possessed, they call up the manufacturer of the firearm and find out what distributor it was shipped to. The chain of evidence goes like this:

Firearm manufacturer

Distribution company (this may be bypassed, depending on the manufacturers preferred way of selling firearms)

FFL dealer/holder

The first owner of the firearm

In Illinois, we are required to keep a 10 year record of who we sold any of our firearms to and what their FOID number is. This may be true for other states, but I only know about IL. I think FFLs only have to keep a 10 year record also. So if everyone keeps their records straight, the firearm can be traced to the current/last owner.

Unless the ATF demands ALL transaction records from FFLs (like they recently, and illegally, tried to do) we are only 'partially registered'.

I think that's all I'll tackle for now. Hope this clarifys things a little bit.

In indiana when we used to sell guns we would only sell to residents of indiana. we had people from chicago coming in all the time looking at guns, no offense to you, but we told them to get lost. I think its against the law for us to sell to a person out of state, maybe I am wrong.

Anyways chicago is a reall messed up place and I am glad i dont live there anymore.

Illinois rezidents can buy longarms from bordering states. I've bought a rifle and shotgun from Fetla's in Valpo with no hassles. However, we must comply with Illinois sales practices (24hr wait on longarms). As for Chicago rezidents buying guns in Indiana, they could just be looking for something that they keep at a friend/relative's house. I think even the IL dealers are a little wary of selling a handgun to a rezident of Chicago.

Hoosierboy: No offense taken. This state sucks!

Thanks jcyoung. I figured that if a gun was found in a crime of course they would trace that, and that may be where the FBI comes in. But in this article it said they traced 11,500+ guns and not all were used in crimes. Thats the part I didn't get. What if they trace the gun and found out who the owner was and the owner said it was stolen? Does the owner get the gun back?

I doubt anyone would sell a Chicago resident a handgun legally because it's illegal. No offense taken hoosierboy, I moved to the suburbs, I hate Chicago too! I don't really like IL either but it does beat living in the city. I have so many in-laws that work for 'the machine' you wouldn't believe it. They all heil Daley because they can all get jobs with the city as long as he is in office. And yes, they are as crooked as the rest of them.
