This was sent as a reply to an Email from Toys-R-Us regarding an on-line sale. I thought you folks here might have some comments.

Dear Folks,

Due to the anti second amendment stance of your company we will no longer count you among our valued partners.

Whenever a corporation such as yours
takes a stance that violates the Constitution and the Bill of Rights it makes it impossible for us to patronize your business.

I know that it is "all the rage" and so "chi chi" in Hollywood and elsewhere
to be anti-gun, anti NRA and anti second amendment. However, it is against all that our founders and patriots fought and died for - and it is just plain wrong.

It is especially pertinent as we approach the Fourth of July and all it's meaning regarding freedom, that I inform you of our decision.

I hope that in the coming days and months you will reflect upon your position and spend some time in a thorough research in how, and why, the framers of our Constitution created this amazing and empowering document.
Perhaps with a greater understanding of it's purpose you will see why your position is so offensive to me and possibly, to many other freedom loving customers.

I would rather my granddaughter learn about the real meaning of our heritage and freedoms from someone like me, who stands firm in the face of controversy than you, who turns in the wind.

It is your right to be able to take such a stand as it is mine to deplore it

Her toys and the toys of our other youngsters and their friends will not come from you.

Regards,

"Makayla's Gramps"

Could someone summarize what T-R-U is doing/saying that prompts this boycott? I've seen a lot railing against T-R-U but nothing concrete on why.

Check some of those earlier threads. There was a NY Post article wherein Toys 'R Us was described as refusing to sign a lease for the 'Bow Tie' building in Times Square because the lessor was also leasing to the NRA for their new theme restaurant. The story appears to be confirmed, although there is not much news on this front.

I wrote them a snail-mail letter. Here's a copy for those interested in reading it.

Mr. John Eyler
President & CEO
Toys "R" Us, Inc.

Paramus, New Jersey 07652

Dear Mr. Eyler:

I am very disappointed in Toys "R" Us. I read recently in the June 15, 2000 edition of the New York Post that your company will refuse to sign a lease for space in a particular building if the National Rifle Association opens a family-oriented restaurant and arcade in the same building. The same NY Post article quotes several members of Congress as praising your action as a "principled stand." To what principle are they referring?

At first, I thought it might be a moral stand against violence (or rather, against an organization that you might incorrectly perceive to represent violence). Yet, Toys "R" Us sells toys that have a basis in violence (e.g., "action" figures such as GI Joe and various wrestling stars, as well as toy guns and squirt guns), and games with a violent theme (e.g., Perfect Dark, a first person perspective shooter game; WCW Mayhem, which features violent fights; Starcraft 64, a war simulation game; and Pokemon Yellow, a Pokemon fighter training game-just to name a few). Therefore, I must conclude that your reason is not a moral stand against violence; otherwise, you would not sell many of the products that you do. Rather, you have decided to make a political stand against an organization, which represents individual rights, which you simply do not like.

While I do not yet have any children, many of my friends and relatives who are married either have children or are entering the phase of their lives in which having children becomes a desire (a longtime friend of mine and his wife have told me they are now expecting their first child in about 8 months). Since it appears to me that your company wishes to be considered for it's political positions, I will oblige you. Please do not misunderstand: I fully realize that as a corporate president, you have the right and responsibility of choosing how, when and where to spend your company's money. As a consumer, I have the right and responsibility of doing the same with my own money. I choose not to do business with companies that do not respect my constitutional rights, in particular my Second amendment rights. As a gun owner and recreational shooter, I find Toys "R" Us' position offensive and hypocritical; therefore, I do not wish to do business with you. In the future, when I consider from whom to purchase toys for the children of my friends and relatives, your company will not be one of the choices. When you appear to base your corporate decisions on political prejudice, you should realize that your customers might base their shopping decisions on your political position.

Sincerely,
(me)
