I am planning to drive to New Mexico from Georgia in April. I have a CCW from GA. From the information at Packing.Org, none of the states recognize my permit.

I would like to hear from members who live or travel in these states as to how to legally transport my weapon. I prefer to have it loaded and near when I drive.

Please advise,

Vee

First off, maintain a neat and clean appearance and don't break the speed limit by over five mph--and the odds are 99.9% that you'll have no interaction with any police. I drive I-10 from Tallahassee to west Texas several times a year, plus a trip through Phoenix and back...

In Texas, a "traveller" may have a pistol in the vehicle during his direct travel-path. And on premises under his control, which includes motel rooms. If you get stopped for a minor traffic violation in Texas, show your CCW along with your driver's license; it might get you off with a warning ticket.

So far as I know about New Mexico, you can have an autopistol in one pocket, and the magazine in another; carrying an unloaded pistol is legal.

FWIW, hope this helps.

Art,

Thank you for the advice. I usually stay neat and clean cut. However, I have trouble holding down the speed.

Having made it from Terlingua to Denver in 12 hours (900 miles) and from Terlingua to Austin in 6-1/2 hours (500 miles), I think I understand about hurryin'. Good ol' CBs & Escorts...

My problem in today's world is not so much the notion of a speeding ticket. Nor am I worried about "what might happen" to me if I put the pedal to the metal. It's the lil gal doing 85mph while putting on her makeup; or the guy wandering from lane to lane, reading a book! (Saw three "readers" on this last run to Vegas and back.) How much can somebody see when they're draining the last of their Exotic Water, sody-pop or beer?

In the State of Louisiana, your vehicle is considered and extension of your homestead. Therefore, you may keep a loaded pistol in the glove box but if you get stopped, let the LEO know about it asap.

It is legal to thwart a car-jacking with a firearm as well and there is a law on the books to back this up.

Drive safely.

HB501

RFD Judiciary
Rd 1 17-FEB-2000

Existing law does not authorize a person who is licensed from another state to carry a handgun or pistol in that state to carry a handgun or pistol in this state. This bill would authorize a person from another state, who is licensed to carry a handgun or pistol in that state, to carry a handgun or pistol in Alabama if the state has reciprocity with Alabama in allowing an Alabama resident to carry a handgun or pistol in the other state.
-----

Very few if any states 'officially' recognize
an Alabama license because of the issuing process. The background check done by the sheriff doesn't require everything short of a
brain scan, a five-year plan, or a bank loan
to pay for the 'privilege'.
