Toronto struggles with rising gun violence

And not one politically incorrect word about the deaths attributable to the Indo-Canadian/Vietnamese/Asian gangs on the west coast or the Jamaican/Asian/African-Canadian (?) gangs in Toronto. Also unmentioned is any connection to immigration, legal and otherwise.

A multicultural and diverse society benefits from having an American neighbor to blame.

Canada reminds me of a line from Joseph Heller's "Catch 22". I don't remember the character but "he was a selfmade man who owed his lack of success to nobody". However, everybody else is to blame.

is it a new issue for Canada?

Availability of firearms in US, that is, not the rising violence. Didn't think so. US firearm laws, if anything, became stricter over years. I therefore fail to see the correlation between US and this new rise of violence in Canada, and it makes me wonder why noone from opposing parties threw this obviousness into him yet.

This historical perspective clearly shows that the venerable PM chooses to ignore real reasons in favor of diversions. Everyone above the age of 14 should be able to guess why he is doing it.

I'm having a mild case of deja vu here; Netherlands and their drug policies come to mind. While Dutch themselves rightfully enjoy some real successes resulting their liberal position, the neigboring countries accuse it exactly the way Canada accuses US. Even the vocabulary is similar. I still recall reading that biased, unbalanced, highly anecdotal, and factually inaccurate report of McCaffrey [edited: wrote up a wrong name due to a Freudian slip at first], a notorious critic of the Dutch policies in Clinton administration, who made laughing stock of himself and the administration by that report.

I predict: if handguns are outlawed in Canada... and are somehow taken out of circulation (easier said than done)... if it ever happens... long guns will become primary tools of murder, and it will be their turn next. Knives will follow shortly after.

A Canadian who doesn't live in Toronto/hand gun ban

Hi Guys I'm in both agreement and disagreement. First, the knee jerk reaction of Mayor Miller is quite predictable .They had 53 shooting deaths in 2005 compared to459 auto related deaths in the same time period and nobody is going to ban motor vehicles anywhere in my country or yours. However, we are in the midst of a Federal election and go to thepolls on Jan 23. the LIBERAL PARTY which was incumbent is fast losing this race. For the first time a conservative party is leading in the polls! It is the CONSERVATIVE PARTY OF CANADA Headed by Stephen Harper who has promised to end the federal gun registry if elected .Harper is fast winning the hearts and minds of the real Canadian public. Our two countries have been friends and brothers in arms for many many years. But look at it from our point of view. Our late PM Pierre Trudeau, summed it up perfectly "living next door to America is like sleeping with an Elephant, ever little move causes concern!" All our gun laws are federal and can't be changed by any Provincial jurisdiction such as the "Sullivan" law in New York City. Any changes must be made by Parliment. So give us a chance to see first what will transpire in 2 weeks! Remember you can always tell a Canadian, when you step on his foot he says I'm sorry! Jim Velcheff:) :(
