Tornado brushes

My brother recently purchased a cleaning / tool kit, and with it came these strange looking brushes I hadn't seen before.

I looked them up and found out they're called tornado brushes.

Any thoughts on them? I'm hesitant to use them, because they're steel, and steel to steel contact doesn't seem like a good idea to me especially when cleaning out the bores of our weapons. at least I know the bronze brushes shouldn't hurt the bores.
 
The end of the wire doesn't touch the bore , actually there is no 'end'. I find it's good for shotguns to take out the plastic residue from the shells.Haven't used it for anything else. They've been around for many years.
 
They've been around a while. We scrubbed the devil out of KCPD-issue Model 64's with 'em right at 30 years ago and if it hurt the bores, you sure couldn't tell it from the 75 yard line.

Thanks for the info guys, my search results showed that they're used primarily for shotguns and chambers on revolvers. I don't think I'll be putting them through our rifled barrels any time soon...
 
Yes, that is the intended use of them, on the smooth bores of shotguns, cylinders, and chambers. They don't do much good in rifled barrels since the loops don't get into the grooves the way a good bronze or nylon brush will.
 
I've been using them for years and like you, I did not understand them and was hesitant on using them. Now, I use them without any reservations and only on shotguns that are very dirty. They work great and really leave a clean finish with no damage to the bore. Like I said, most of the time you should not need them but sure clean up a dirty bore ..... ;)

Several years ago I shot a Stainless MK-II 22LR.
I made the mistake of using a Stainless Steel brush to clean it.
It took the riflings out of it. When it came back from Ruger, I
have used nothing but Tornado brushes on all my guns...
 
They work really well for other smooth walled tubes, such as gas cylinders as well.
I use a .410 one for cleaning the gas cylinder in the FAL.
 
I've been using 38 caliber Tornado brushes for the cylinder of my .357 revolvers for about 23 years.
