Tools for Changing out 870 Stock & Fore-end

I want to change out the wood stock and fore end for a fiberglass one on my 870 Police shotgun. I know that I need to buy a fore end wrench from Brownells for the fore end swap but how about the stock? My buddy says that the Remington stock tool looks to him like a 3/8? drive socket set with a 9/16? drag link socket. Has any one tried this and if so is this the right size? Thanks:)

For the rear just use a very large screw driver. For the forearm, you will have to have a wrench designed to remove the nut. It has to have two flats at the outer edge of a large tube that slides down inside of the forearm with a handle up top to turn it. I'll post you a pic this afternoon to show you what mine looks like. It isn't hard to make yourself one.

Here's one that I made years ago when I was in a hurry to remove the nut in question for the forearm. It wasn't made very well, but heck, I was only after getting the nut off, not worried at the time how it looked. I have since remade one that uses a 3/4" rod that has the flats milled into it and then welded in place and has the handle on top. The point of this pic is that you can make a tool that works and doesn't have to look just like the ones you see in a catalog for them to be useful. Hope this helps you out. To make it, I simply used my jab saw to slice out an area wide enough for the flat iron piece to slide into so I could weld it up. Measure the width between the edgs of the nut and cut the flat iron to that length. Then simply weld a handle on the end.

That big screwdriver for stock bolt removal

Wrap the shank of the screwdriver with tape (any kind) a couple inches from the tip to a diameter that will just fit into the access hole under the butt plate. This keeps the slotted tip centered in the hole. Otherwise, you might get the flat tip between the bolt head and the wood. It doesn't take much torque under that condition to split out the side of the butt stock.

To remove the butplate/pad, be sure to use some oil on the phillips screwdriver when you push it into the pad to engage the screws.
To remove the fore-end, screw buying a remington tool. I used a flat piece of scrap aluminum I found in my junk drawer. It was about the right width to fill the slots on the screw piece. I just grabbed it with a Vice-grips, locked it in place, and unscrewed the ring slowly & carefully. If you don't plan on doing this for a living, or more than once in a blue moon, why buy the tool?
