for some load development.
The gun is a Marlin 1895 45-70 that I had a longer mag tube put on.
The bullet is a 400 grain tumble lube with a gas check.
The mold is from Tom at Accurate.
I started at 35.5 grains of IMR 4198 and it did a little better than the 36 grains I shot today. I shot the 35.5 the other night and did not have a camera.

50 yards and supported.

beautiful rifle.I wish I had kept mine, but I traded toward a Pedersoli sharps rifle...I love that gun...It is about the only rifle I shoot any more..I used to shoot black powder out of it but now mainly smokeless and all cast bullets..It has never had a jacketed bullet shot through it...I used to shoot 416 grain cast out of the marlin as well..It was deadly at 100 yards...Good luck with yours...John

I have a stainless Marlin 1895GS that we use for backup when hunting in Alaska, and it is one of my absolute favorite rifles. Fast action, very accurate, easy to shoulder and maneuver due to it's short stature.

I have also used it for deer hunting in Northern Michigan, and EVERY shot has been an instant drop, unlike some of the "smaller" calibers (.223, .300 WSM).

The rifle is built to withstand anything, and will handle Buffalo Bore .45-70 magnum loads, although most humans cannot shoot more than three at a time.

Have a blast!

Good groups, good looking rifle and I like the time out cage for the kid placed where he can hear the TV but not see it. Must drive him nuts.

That is the best time out cage I have ever had. Although I have been told that it would be frowned upon if I had photographic evidence of its actual use.

45-70 marlin cb

MY son and I shoot in two MARLIN CB`S in 45-70 and two Pedersoli`s in 45-70. We bought them to shoot in the cowboy action shoots and we do but we now nunt with them as well, mostly pig hunt but they are fun to use as a plain old walking aqround rifle. Who knows might be confronted by a bigfoot, I understand they are getting thick in this area. We use 35.0 grs of IMR 3031 with a 405 gr cast RNFP bullets, really a light load but but it is such a pleasure to shoot and that load shoots well in all 4 guns. The 1st time pig hunting I left the (( PIG LOADS )) at home and brought these light loads. I should not have worried every thing we shot was DRT so we use the light loads for every thing. The heavy loads are not as pleasent to shoot and I don`t shoot them as well. Getting old & fat and recoil shy. A MARLIN is great shooting rifle and the 45-70 is a great caliber. Great Match. ken

My old Lyman manual lists 36.5gr IMR 3031 under a 400gr cast bullet as "factory duplication load", and while I have traded off my Marlin in 2010, I still have a Ruger No.3 and a T/C Contender bbl.

The load shoots "soft" in rifles, and acceptably stiff in the Contender. Accuracy is very good, including some two hole three shot groups at 50yds.

Does everything I need done by a .45-70. And yes, I have some of those "walk ya back a step when fired" loads (for the Ruger ONLY). I just don't have a use for them, except to give visitors something to shoot when they brag about how recoil "doesn't bother me...." :D

I have several 45-70's... love the cartridge...

smallest is my 15" Contender, which is capable of 3 leaf clover groups at 75 yards using a Burris 2-7 X posi lock scope & a field rest

a couple middle of the pack, consist of a custom Martini single shot, & my Russian Remmy side by side double...

but the beast is my stainless guide gun, & rounds I loaded from an artical I read about a guy who took one to Africa hunting, & actually killed two cape buffalo with one shot, when the bullet penitrated through the 1st bull, & killed a cow standing behind the 1st shot bull

those rounds recoiled off the sights on my rifle ( when it was in stock form )... they are now "stuck" on much better than in stock form... my 1st groups were a bit bigger than the OP's, but then my sights fell off :o not sighted it in yet with the new sights... waiting for warmer weather
