Too much inter-debate!

Listen,

I have read most of the posts since I purchased my gun in April at the expense of my career! We debate alot back and forth both here and legal, pretty much saying the same core statement, but differently. I would like to take the argument to one of the anti-websites that most of you refer to (besides Rosie- it is boring arguing with a UMASS Amherst housemom). I think I am eduacated enough to handle my own now- little Danny is all grow'ed up. Please respond to posts where good debate can be had.

Not really.

taking the fight *unasked* to the antis
is a real waste of time.

However, on the flip side, you will read here
time and time again where points and issues brought up on this board have been used by board members in open debates with antis of the friends and family variety, often with positive results. So I don't think it is vain.

I see a lot of different points of view here. Some of the stuff I have read here has prompted me to go off and study some historical facts and laws and findings in depth and it has made me a much more literate person with a better grip on the facts.

I've had to eat a lot of crow as a result of getting involved in some of the debates on this board and that means my opinions and points of view have matured and been tried and tested, some found wanting and been improved or discarded, some found solid and therefore reinforced.

I don't think the exercise is futile at all.

I have converted two anti's. That is a plus 4 vote in the total. Any one we convert is a plus two for the bottom line on election day.

I agree with the maturing of opinions and increased literacy, but one must be fully versed in both sides of the debate to adequately argue the facts, a second motive for anti-sight postings.

Just think if each one of us 5-6000 people who belong to this board debated one anti a day- or even week our arguements collectively get better and better all of the time. A good debater would debunk the myth of the in-bred wife beating gun nuts we are all prejudged to be.

One note of caution here: Make sure you're debating people who can actually be influenced by things like facts and reason. There are many gun-grabbers who are absolutely and unalterably convinced that guns are bad because, well, just because. You waste your time and drive your own blood pressure unnecessarily high when you talk to these fools. If you go onto a hard-core anti-gun board, you'll have about as much success as some "Hillary 2000" campaigner looking for converts here.

My suggestion: Find people who are uninformed about guns or who have formed their opinions based on the lies of HCI and other national socialists. For instance, challenge the casual anti-gun comments made on general discussion boards, or on boards focused on some topic other than guns. Someone who's open-minded can be converted by logical debate; the True Believer isn't going to change no matter how convincingly you argue.

FWIW, I know many cases of antis being converted to our side, but no cases of someone on the pro-freedom side going over to the antis. (I don't count lying weasels like The Evil Al Gore, whose pro-gun votes early in his career were done from sheer opportunism and not from any sort of principles. Gore says or does anything that will help him today. Tomorrow is another story.)
