Too dry to shoot?

Anyone living in the midwest putting off outdoor range time because of the extremely dry conditions? In my county in north central Kansas fireworks were banned this year because of the dryness. Also, when the grass begins to feel more like pine needles...it kind of gives me pause to go shoot. Not saying I use tracers in the middle of a field but still...better to err on the side of caution perhaps.

I now live and shoot in the short grass prairies of eastern AZ. I continue to shoot my conventional weapons/ammo year around. I restrict my Black Powder shooting until after the Monsoons, after a rain and after a snow.

BP shooting will start a fire very quickly.

The TX Panhandle has been going through dry times for a couple of years now. I don't shoot the black powder scene, tracers, esplodin targets, or any of that stuff. The only thing we really pay attention to is parking or driving through CRP grass. I've never personally seen a catalytic converter start a range fire that I know of, but I hear enough about it that I guess it pays to heed the warning.

If it's hot and dry enough for you to smell the resin and plant odors evaporating from the vegetation, you have explosive fuels to contend with. Good time to shoot at the range, instead of the countryside.

I got a Crosman PowerMaster 760 scoped with a CenterPoint 4-16x40mm for those days too hot for the range. I setup a shooting gauntlet in my backyard to keep with shooting. I set targets at different distances out to 25 yards and shoot a round-robin while sipping a cold one from my shooting bench.

I here you when you talk about drought. We finally got well needed rain down here in South Texas. I was shooting my Glock 20 a while back before the rain at my brother's place. I forgot I had loaded some 10mm tracers in a magazine or two. It was right before dark when I was letting my wife shoot it and out come the fireball tracers. It scared her bigtime when the fire started flying...but my brother and I almost had heart attacks when the grass started on fire. Luckily we had a hose near by...it could've been bad!

I think I'm going to put off shooting for a good while, and the 100+ degree heat is sort of a deterrent in and of itself. Boy, am I getting an itching for some shootin' though. :(

^^^ same here. Too darn hot.

I mentioned to a co-worker today that the phrase "It's not too bad out today, it's only 88." should never be said in WI:D
