Toning down stocks

I just bought a Pedersoli Sharps and the EMF Rmington pistol.
The stock on the Sharps and the grips on the Remington are, well, GLEAMING.
I there a way to cut the shine of the finish with out removing the stain.
MEK? Denatured Alcohol? Very very fine steel wool?

I would try the finest steel wool you can get. I think they still sell it down to OOOO. Also, look for a spot to test things on. Inside of the barrel channel, maybe under the butt plate. (assuming they are finished the same way)
