To trade or not to trade

Hi folks. Not any kind of firearm expert so I need a bit of help. I just had a friend offer to trade me his Yugoslav SKS for my .38 Special. SKS has wood stock and fires. Decent shape but not pretty. .38 was my dads' old service revolver. Terrific shape. Holstered and stored for years. Good trade or not ? What do you think ? Thanks in advance everyone.
 
Personally, I would not trade a gun that belonged to my father/grandfathers for anything. Especially not if it was a gun he carried everyday.

What kind of gun is the .38? A S&W, Ruger, Colt? If value is all that concerns you that makes a big difference too.

I would pass on that deal. Well if I really wanted the SKS I'd probably try to find something else to trade (furniture, lawn mower, wife's cat etc.) or offer cash if I really wanted it.

(What's the going rate for a pint of 'A' positive now days?)

Thanks for the quick reply. Dad was only on the force for a couple years back in the late 60's. No fond memories there. It's a Colt Police Positive Special serial B34890

Well, at least for me, this is a no-brainer. You probably have a Colt or Smith and on top of that, it was your Dad's gun. I can give you many reasons why you should not or I would not and only one for trading and that is because, it is your call. .. ;)

I have bought guns and even traded a few, while in heat and so far, have not been hurt too bad. However, I do have some regrets and for me, this would be one. .... :)

I have no problem trading guns I don't use anymore, but there is no way I'd even think about this one.

I just did a little more checking online to see what a Colt like it sells for, dam ! While the prices vary wildly, on average I think it's probably worth much more than his SKS. Might just offer to buy/trade something else, but frankly would buy just to turn for a few $$. I think he'll take $350 for the SKS with a couple of extra magazines. How 'bout that. Now what do you think ?

This pretty much sums it up for me.

Also, I would rather have a cool old revolver than an SKS, though I seem to prefer S&W for DA. Had one for a while, or whatever it is they call the Chinese ones, Type something or other. It was the only semi-auto rifle I could afford at the time, but it didn't warm the cockles of my heart. I eventually got an AR and a Garand, so off it went.

That is just my slightly rambling opinion of course. It's your gun, do what makes you happy.

On a side note, my now wife was with me when I bought the SKS, and when we got home, I got it and a 12 pack of Dr. Pepper I had in the back of the car out. She looked at this tableau, and declared that I was in fact, a Texan.

Lol :) Don't worry and thanks everyone not going to trade it , at least not for that anyway. Still might make offer on his SKS though, if I can get it for a price that I can make a few $$ on that is. Sentimental value here is with dads' .35 remington. Dad used to hunt with it all the time. Still in near pristine shape. Simple but beautiful rifle, going to keep that one.

Anyone here know approximately what an old Yugoslav Military issue SKS in fair shape sells for ?

If it was your dads gun I'd pass on the trade. My dad gave me one of his rifles an even tho I never talk to him and don't even really get along with him I won't sell or trade this rifle. He gave me a shotgun to but I gave that to my bro since he had more memory's with it then me.

$300, 'bout what I thought. Don't worry all NOT trading the .38. He's a good friend so I'll still make him an offer on the SKS see what happens. Knowing my luck he'll say yes then I'll have sell the darn thing !
 
Like many others here keep your dad's gun. If you want an SKS save up the money for one. Your dad's service revolver has history of a personal nature to it. Back in the 1970s I bought a shotgun from my grandpa. I still have it and do not plan on letting it go. I have several guns that were Christmas gifts from my parents (both have passed) and I don't plan on letting go of any of them anytime soon. Family history means more than just the words.
 
Avoid the Yugo, too. ...unless you've shot it before, and know that all of the Yugo quirks have been worked out. (They often have gas system issues, that negatively impact reliability.)

Personal Opinion Only.... NEVER TRADE OR SELL...You will regret it... Never be able to get that firearm back... I dearly miss my old Ruger Supper Blackhawk 44Mag....My Ruger Mark I's and II's that I sold/traded.

You wanted to trade your Father's Colt for a beat up Yugo SKS? Not a chance in hell I would even considered that trade and I'm glad you didn't either.

Good luck getting the the Yugo though.
 
SKS is a cheap kick around gun, I have had a few some are better then others but at best just a cheap plinker. People will pay $300. for one, not me.

Years ago I traded a SKS for an old S&W revolver, I liked the S&W much better. It turned out to be worth more money also.
