To tame an N-frame

What is the best grip to deal with magnum loads in a 629 (4" barrel)? When I bought it, it had Pachmayr Presentation grips, which I replaced with a Hogue Monogrip, but the latter leaves the backstrap exposed and the hump on the frame is driven sharply into the web of my hand. Is there something else that works better? Thanks...pwd

Well the Hougues usually tame the recoil pretty well for me , but I am shooting a 6.5" barrel with under lug. An alternative might be the grip supplied on the 500 S&W Magnum. In the description "Hogue Sorbathane® Recoil Absorbing Grip" It appears to wrap around the entire grip frame and if it was designed to "tame" the 500 , it should bedo well for 44 recoil. Unless the grip frame is different - is the 500 grip like the K-frame? Maybe Hogue makes an N-Frame version?

On my 29 Mountain Gun, I went with the same Pachmayrs that you took off of yours. They're really too narrow for my hand, but I'm forcing myself to get used to them because they DO cover the backstrap and cushion the web of my thumb from the recoil of heavier loads that I'm starting to play with.

I haven't found anything yet that is both a good fit for my hand AND handles recoil well. The Ahrends that came with the MG feel great...as long as you stay in the .44 special realm of recoil. When you bump the 250 gr Kieths up toward 1000 fps, that's when that frame hump starts smackin' ya.

I wish the Pachmayrs came in multiple widths. I'm refusing to wrap electrical tape around the grips to improve the feel....so far.

If the X-frame has the same grip size as the K-frame, why didn't they make the N-frame with a K-frame grip?

Heck if I know. There have, however, been some 3" N-frames sold with K/L-frame size grips from the factory, and it was a somewhat common mod on "belly gun" N-frame setups back in the day...

I prefer wood combat grips on my Smith mod. 29-5 3 inch. The rubber grips seem to irritate my hand more than any "cushioning" effect is worth. Although I really don't shoot that many rounds at a time through it....I just shot a hundred rounds with a typical course of fire being 5 shots in 5 seconds. It was very manageable, but not for plinking all day long...

While not Presentations, I've found the Compact Decelerators to be the best thing on my Mountain gun. Yup you need to cover the back strap with rubber on that critter for 300 grain loads! ;)
