To silicone or not

I have seen some threads regarding the use of silicone for the firing pin lubrication.

I thought silicone guns up at low temperature.

Would some of the more knowledgable people clue me in.

Thx

Silicone is a perfectly good lube for squeaky clutch pedal return springs and the occasional sliding door. That's about it.

I have it on good authority, namely me, that it gums up sliding doors also. So we're down to one good use for it. Actually, I think it's ok for use on rubber seals such as o-rings. So we're back to up 2 uses.

For those of you that live in "snow country", there is one more good use....It works really well when sprayed on the auger/fan/discharge areas of your snow blower. I've heard that the cooking spray "pam" works well for snow blowers, too

For firing pin lubrication, I think Eezox would be my choice. Synthetic so it can't deaden a primer, excellent corrosion protection, good lubricating qualities, works well at extreme temperatures.

Do a search on Eezox, and then another on the username Clayton. I learned a while back that he knows lubes, rust inhibitors, and cleaners better than I ever will. His posts on the topic are educational and useful.

...or you can just use Break Free CLP on the firing pin and everything else. Works for full-auto M16A1's, works for me.

Silly-cone has a GREAT use for guns...

it is the ONLY lube to use on paintball guns... it keeps all those rubber seals soft and pliable... (and if your centerfire pistol is fulla rubber seals, it'd work on that too!)

that said, I spray it all over the cases in which my guns go... (great water barrier) and I spray my paintball guns... but it NEVER goes near the working parts of my firearms!

I hate to be a party pooper, but I should warn anyone who would use silicone spray on rubber parts. Yes, the silicone is a good rubber preservative, but the solvent base in some sprays will instantly damage the rubber on contact. I use a Maguire's auto product for rubber (and vinyl).

Dwight M S ...

you ain't poopin any parties I can see... the only reason I use silly-cone on paintball guns is that the "poly" rubber o-rings arte supposed to be lubed that way (the manufacturer told me so)

and it works well for waterproofing plug wires on a 4X4 when puddle jumping in them...
