To Mak or not to Mak, that is the question??

Lately it seems that I hear so much on this forum about how great makarovs are, that I can't help but be interested. Now someone posted this site, www.jcarmory.com which has them for 139.95 for an unissued bulgarian model. So what do you think guys?? Is this a bargain, or a waste of good old green backs??? Are they really as handy and reliable as I've heard??

Bob,
Thats a great deal for a great little handgun. I purchased my Commerical Bulgarian (Arsenal) from a local gun shop for $199 plus tax, and I still think its worth more than that. This is probably the 2nd most accurate gun I own..only 2nd to my Sig P226 9mmx19. I would JUMP on it if I were you. It is built like a tank and unbelievably reliable. Not a single hiccup with hollowpoints, lrn, etc. You won't be sorry.

Nathan...

I also have a commercial Arsenal Bulgarian Mak, and I've been very pleased with it. This week I'm going to get one of the unissued Bulgarian milsurp Maks also. For this price, there isn't a better deal around - a dependable/reliable/accurate gun for around $150? Why aren't we all getting one? I can't think of a better knock around gun.

in the parlance of the times, markarov's are "all that and a bag of chips"
a good defensive round (in the 9 x 18),
ammo that costs $5.25 for 50 rounds,
extra magazines for 4 bucks ($1.50 in Shotgun news).
i like makarovs, specially a certain Russian one with adjustable sights and Pearce grips, that's the one i have, it was my first semi-auto.

Cole Distributing had East Germans (the pick of the makarov litter) for $139, but only a limited quantity.

SOG has them for $150.
www.makarov.com will have the latest info on prices on their forum.

I'd rather get the new Bulgie from www.jcarmory.com I've dealt with Greg Monte of JC Armory. He's upfront, honest and quick to ship out merchandise. After a few hours and some Hoppe's No 9 it cleaned up real nice. Deep glossy Blue finish and tight tolerances. The safety was a bit stiff, but after working it a few times it's now smooth. DA pull is heavy but easily mastered and SA pull is crisp. It's VERY accurate. At the range folks are surprised at how accurate the humble little Bulgie is, it puts all shots to point of aim. Get them while you can.

Bob,

As the Nike commercial says, "Just do it!" I've had a Russian Mak in 9x18 since '94. A couple of years ago I bought another Russian in .380, and just recently I purchased an E. German Mak. That should give you an idea about my feelings concerning these pistols.

I think they're the best "bang for the buck" in semi auto pistols around. Mine have been accurate, reliable and fun to shoot. In fact, soon after buying my first Mak, I began reloading just so I could shoot it more.

The Maks are much more reliable than many "brand name" pistols costing two, three or more times the price. And it almost doesn't matter which one you get, since the differences aren't that great and they all seem to share the important qualities mentioned above.

One thing you do need to be warned about, though. Once you buy one, you will be bitten by the Mak Bug. Fortunately, there's no cure for it at this time. The only known treatment is the purchase of additional Maks. Don't say I didn't warn you.
