To Lapp, or not to Lapp.

Do I need to Lapp the Rings and Mount?

Hope someone will tell me how to reply without showing a quote. No you don't need to lap the rings. If you decide to do so, buy a lapping kit from Brownell's or any other good supplier. By doing it yourself you may be amazed how much metal might need to be removed. Then you will want to do the rest of your rifles and all ofyour friends. Here is what happens. Quality scope manufactures' go to extremes to line up all these lenses and associated parts inside the scope. We buy the scope and rings/bases and slap them on a rifle sometimes torquing all this stuff out of whack. I'll bet this is the main reason scopes have to be returned by some people so often. Some guns have a reputation for eating scopes. By placing a steel bar, 1" and verified streight in your rings and checking for trueness with layout fluid or even a piece of typing paper for a feeler guage can show you if lapping is 'necessary'. Do this with the caps off, by tightening the caps you can bend the bar slightly. Benchresters say it helps accuracy, I think it helps scopes last longer. Think of it as looking through amagnifing glass and tipping it slightly. Hope you got something from this basides confusion. beertrucker-x

Pess Check, agree w/ B trucker, most people do not realize that if you lapp a set of rings mounted on a particular base, if you ever take them off and use in another set up, you need to do it over again.
You have just changed everything you worked so hard to accomplish, now they are out of alignment ....again

Burrhead---anyone help. I don't see a post reply at the bottom of the screen, realy, I'm looking. Is it cause I'm using a web tv system. I don't want to look any dumber than I am. But I do know guns better than this stuff.

beertrucker, you're not dumb. goto the bottom left of the screen if you can ... very bottom left. if *post reply* doesn't stick out like a democrat at a republican convention then what you can do when you reply to someone the way you do is just delete all of their quote out of your white box first. try *select all* then *delete*. hope this helps in some way.

THANKS I ain't stupid just blind. Actually the text is easy to see and read but those icons look like flowers or something on yhe tv screen. What do y expect for fifty bucks? Before I was clicing on the last of the four symbols behinde the date of the post. Well look out now. I do feel that I'm pretty knoweledgable about rifles but usually don't get into serious debates about them. I feel we are all on the same side and a variety of opinions is what keeps the campfire such a great place. So if someone asks what my definition of a magnum is I'll mention the big bottle of wine. For those that prefer a pissing contest...I'll show them the electric fence. First one to soak an insulater at three paces is the winner---if ya call that winning...most times no body wins a pissin contest. Lapping? It's grinding away the metal so that there is a streight hole for your scope to set in. Jon, ask again or mail me and I'll read what has already been posted and fill in the blanks. Thanks again and I look forward to getting to know ya all better. beertrucker-x
