Which type is better for home and car defense and overall use? Hammer or Hammerless. Seems to me the hammer might be prefered because you are able to decock the gun without unloading the shells and pulling the trigger (just like the difference between say a Glock or a 1911) On the other hand....with a hammerless, you can load the shells, close the gun and it is ready to go, whereas on a hammered gun you have to load, close the gun AND cock the hammers back (right?)

With a hammerless gun all you have to do is snick the safety back on if you decide not to fire it. With a hammer gun, you have to pull the trigger on a COCKED hammer and ease said hammer down with your thumb if you decide not to fire.

Which one sounds safer to you?

If you leave a hammerless double barrel loaded, you have to leave it cocked. A model with hammers doesn't have this problem. I'm also interested in what others have to say about this. I've been thinking about some kind of coach gun, myself. Those remington spr220's look "interesting".

Jeff Cooper told me reguarding the proper use of the 'lupara': " you only bring the hammers to full cock when the condition is 'Red' , the same as when you snick off the safety on a hammerless. Your finger is still off the trigger until you have identified the danger and the front sight is aligning and you are deciding to SHOOT" If this doesn't occur the gun is rendered safe or better yet broken open and the hammers downloaded.:)
