To autoport or not?

I have a Premier II on order from Baer, and was just talking to them on the phone this morning. I found that I can expect my gun in August.

I was thinking to myself that after I had the Optima 2000 put on, and the autoporting done that it would be in September before I could take it out and shoot it. I got the bright idea ... could Les Baer get the autoporting done for me any faster? So I asked.

Wow! The phone conversation changed at once. Not only will he not have it done, if I get it done it will void the waranty. I started to ask why, when the lady on the line said "Les says he doesn't do that, and doesn't want to get into it". (Which I interpreted to mean that he didn't want to talk about it, not that he didn't want to buy the equipment to actually cut the barrels and slides).

Any comments/suggestions? Is auto-porting (magna-porting) that bad for a gun? I know that some don't think it works. I have seen it on a couple of guns, and it appears to be very carefully done. I shot a couple of clips of Hydrashok 230 gr through my Kimber and another guys who had it done, and the recoil seemed slightly less. Am I missing something here?

Please enlighten me. Thanks.

I suspect that Baer doesn't want anyone cutting holes in "his" guns. .45's don't have a lot of pressure to work with, so porting doesn't help them much. Baer still makes compensated pistols, dont they? If you want a Baer, and you want ports, why don't you just order one of their ported models, intead of the PII?

Actually, I forgot to mention that although the guns with auto-porting on them that I tried before were .45's, this gun will be a .40 S&W. I want to shoot the full load .40's and get the gun back on target as soon as possible.

Casey, this is just my honest opinon but I think porting a handgun is rediculous. If the recoil is too great for accurate, rapid fire shooting then why not choose a smaller caliber handgun. Porting is going to lower your muzzle velocity a bit anyway so what have you really gained? Port a .45 so you now essentially have a the delivery of a .40? Port a .40 so you now essentially have the delivery of a ???...

I may get flamed for this response but this is my opinion on the matter. Choose a caliber and practice practice practice. Spend you money on the ammunition and range fees rather than the gadgets.
