Tired of YouTube "reviews"

Is it me or are the vast number of firearm "reviews" posted on YouTube not reviews at all?? Most seem to be either someone 1) zooming in on every square inch of their weapon & accessories and just repeating the manufacturer's product specs or 2) getting all 'tacti-cooled' up in their tac gear complete with their (non-impressive) tactical poker face and passive aggressive silence to simply video themselves firing the weapon, but NEVER showing the end target or group afterwards! Is that supposed to be somehow instructive!?

There's a few folks here (e.g., Sturmghewere) that do NOT fall into this group, but why do I have to sift through dozens of boring non-reviews to get to an actual one??? Am I being overly critical or does anyone else share this frustration?

I will often go to youtube to see detailed images of a gun's controls, innards, etc. (recently, Solo, KRISS, Boberg, etc., guns that aren't readily available for inspection), but don't pay much attention to the shooting prowess of the reviewer. What I really dislike is a review that is intended to proselytize, rather than merely describe. There's a guy with a couple of "1991 vs. 1911" videos, and most of the information and conclusions are bogus, but some viewers eat it up.

I don't mind the reviews at all, some are actually pretty good, and I'm assuming the tacticool dress to be just part of the show. Many I think do the mask/helmet deal because they do not want to publicize what they do on their personal time.

I get a little more tired of people posting videos of their firearms stupidity. Handing 12 year olds 10 gauge shotguns, giving inexperienced shooters a full auto AK, and so on.

The only reason they are remotely humorous at all is because no one usually gets seriously injured.

Amen to that!!

Yep... tired of all that. Not just with firearms but everything up there.

Here's an idea why doesn't TFL create a library forum? We can still host over on YT (or how about local to TFL domain?). We could have a vetted library of links here on TFL?

The two things I find helpful about youtube gun reviews are 1) good photos of the internal parts of a gun I'm researching, and 2) takedown information.

I have a Detonics Pocket 9 that I'm having a dickens of a time getting apart. Someone had a good review of this on youtube which I found quite helpful.

But, generally unless someone is torture-testing a gun, I'm not too interested in watching youtube gun reviews.

Re You-Tube Reviews

In regards to this, I think Hickock .45, does an excellant job,
explaining the workings of the firearm, & demonstrating the accuracy
potential of the weapon.

I can't stand when people flame the reviewer for not showing us him clearing the weapon and making it safe. It's not gonna shoot us through the screen and why do I want to waste my time with the first 20 seconds for a safety check. If people watching the video need to see that to reinforce their safety practices then lord help em cause they're already ......

There's a few good reviewers (already mentioned above) and even more bad reviewers but I'd rather have more videos than less, for reasons stated above, not readily avail or want a more detailed view of a gun errr (pistol/rifle).

The best use I have found for them is watching videos of disassembly and reassembly; especially if it's a type of gun I've no experience with.

Some of those are OK, but I'd still recommend getting a 2nd opinion. I've lost track of how many people who've brought 1911 pistols to me, stripped down to the bare metal, for reassembly. Some YouTube video is always mentioned as "making it seem easy."

Then there are the people who get "training" from YouTube. I've had to get fairly...stern with a few.

brmfan why do you watch them
Some ppl are proud of their weapon whether it's a Hi-Point or a Ed brown and everything in-between. I find myself just opening my safe and grabbing a few firearms just to fondle them. What is the big deal? man, did you rise out of the wrong side of the bed? Hope you are well after that rant, A lot of times it helps to vent like so and get it all out.:p

I've learned a ton from watching the better ones... Just one more stream of info... I learn from manufacturers' websites and magazine ads too and they're certainly biased... Of course I use my intelligence and experience to filter ALL info that passes through my brain...

Video is a great medium. The ones that drone on repeating the same stuff over and over are a pain sometimes but, hey, I can fast-forward and skip the dull parts or skip 'em altogether... Just like I do with ALL video that's out there.

Generally, the best ones are short, full of pithy info, don't repeat anything and don't try to be too cute.

Tape: When someone labels their video as a 'review', I expect to see an actual review which includes some form of performance outcome or comparison with other products. Like you I'm also proud of my weapons, but I never get the urge to "fondle" them or any other inanimate object. Sounds like we both could use a cookie and some therapy! :D
