Tips for Romanian SAR-1

I just bought a Romanian SAR-1 AK clone. Woo hoo! I am excited!

However, I found the included manual flimsy and quite useless.

Does anyone know where I can obtain a copy of AK-47 operator's manual? I've been told that there is a place on the Web that has an Adobe Acrobat (pdf) formatted manual.

Any hints or tips regarding this or other general AK break-in/opeations/ammo tips would be appreciated.

You're not going to be happy with my answer, but I say, "forget about all the things you asked about in your post and just shoot it."

Frankly, there's no real need in "breaking in" your AK. I'm an AK fan for sure, but you're not going too see much of a difference, IMHO. If you want to do it, then do this: Clean the barrel every 5 rounds for the first 50 rounds...it's broken in.

Operations...you mean how to dissasemble it, use the sights, or what? We can answer your Q's about that...really super easy. There's really no need for a "manual" of sorts, because the darn things just so simple. If you want something like that, though, check out www.ak-47.net

Ammo? Anything that's 7.62x39 will work, unlike some other assult rifles that can be picky. Smile, your AK will feed rocks and it will like it.

Thanks for the link. Exactly what I was looking for.

BTW, is it okay to dry fire the SAR-1? Or would it damage the firing pin in the long run?

I think the SAR-1 was the soft-hammer version. I'd say no to dry fire. BTW the firing pin should be fine...it's the hammer I'd watch.

frontsite, it was the earlier sar-3 (.223) that had the soft hammer problem

there is no problem with dryfiring any centerfire rifle

Hey Skor, check your hammer for rust spots. Mine was looking like it had the flu when I unwrapped it and compleatly minus and protective oil or grease. I had to sand off the rust.

I took a looksy at the rec.gun on the web and it says on the FAQ that AK's do not have a firing pin spring (and thus may lightly dent a cartridge when it is slammed into the chamber - which means one ought not to load the chamber unless one intends to fire, soon).

Does that mean that the firing pin is vulnerable to breakage? I hope not, since it has a vaunted reputation for reliability and sturdiness. But I would like some thoughts and opinions.

Thanks!

Skorenzy --

The reason people say not to chamber a round unless you intend to shoot is because of slam fires. When you close the bolt on an AK or AR, the firing pin makes slight contact with the primer. Sometimes, this will cause the gun to fire. It happened to me with a SA93. Scare the crap out of me. Now I NEVER close the bolt on a loaded chamber unless the barrel is pointed at the ground or downrange.

Right... Slamfire. Makes sense.

Still, can someone conclusively assure me that I will not break any parts by dryfiring my new Romanian SAR-1 extensively.

I like to dryfire constantly with every centerfire firearms I own to better myself...
