Tipping my assault-rifle-wary parents....

Ok fellas, I am currently lusting over an FAL. Family is pro-gun 100%, just a little curious why I "need" an assault rifle. They are not against them at all, just a little hesitant to have me buy one over say...a Remington 700. Anyone have some ideas on how I can turn them? The reason is because I like the rifle a lot...and that's pretty much the only reason. But I'll need more than that! :D

I probably begin by telling them with the current trend in new laws you may not have the opportunity to purchase such a gun in the future. It is also a good investment.

From the FAL FAQ at The FAL Files:

quote:
The FAL was developed by Dieudonne Saive, and other engineers at Fabrique Nationale (FN), during the late 1940's and early 1950's. It uses many of the principles of the SAFN rifle, or FN-49, which was developed for the most part during World War II. During the 1950's and 60's the FAL was adopted by many countries, and used in or by many others.[/quote]

Hueco - Because it's a battle rifle that's also acceptable as a deer gun (.308 not .223)? Because everyone should have at least one battle rifle? (= modern day militia rifle)

Unless it is a class 3 select fire version, it is not an "Assult rifle". It is an auto loading rifle. It shoots an adequate game hunting cartridge. It is very simple of construction, large parts, easy to strip for cleaning or repair in the field or at home. Ammunition is easily found cheaply. Great for hunting, target shooting, home defence. Not fragile and no high dollar pretties to worry about skinning up.

As a mechanically inqusitive guy, you're fascinated by the operation of the FN-FAL, aren't you. You're going to study the gun intimately until you know the function of every part and use this knowledge in furtherance of your college education. It's a learning aid to marvel at - and why not? After all, it was designed by disciple of God's prophet on earth, Moses (John Moses Browning). Praise the Lord! What can be holier than that?

Many years ago my mom gave me a FN-49 in 30-06 for a elk rifle on my birthday. I still love my mom. :) :) Besides a FAL will last forever even under heavy use and the bore wont rust in the rain. I like the indestructable all weather hunting rifle argument myself. :) :)Just try to wear one out, your shoulder will go first. Good luck and besides everyone should have one. :)

First of all, "assault" rifles have not been legal to manufacture for the public since 1994. That is when using the definition from the 94 crime act. True "assault" rifles have been illegal since 1934, since they have fully automatic features. If you buy a legal new AR-15, it is NOT and "assualt rifle". Gun owners need to learn to use the terms right. Calling an AR-15 and "assualt rifle" only perpetuates the myths about them. AR-15's certainly look scary to people who don't know anything about them, but the fact is, they are no more "deadly" than any other autoloader. To be an "assualt" rifle by the 94 Crime Act, an AR-15 must have a bayonet lug, grenade launcher, or flash suppressor. You will not find a new one with these features unless they have been added (illegal). Unfortunately, they can attract attention just because of their looks. I'd like to get one, but with their prices, I need to justify to myself why I need one.
