time to make a choice

Opened my mail today and there it was a letter from police department stating that i was approved for a gun license. i been waiting for this for about 4 years to apply (financial reasons) and 3 month waiting for this letter so as you can imagine I had enough time to ponder what my first gun purchase will be. I have 3 choices that I believe are classic guns that have quality and most importantly i will have all of them in time its just the matter of order. i will be mostly shooting targets but equality important it will be my hunting back up gun.
here are my choices and hope you guys can help me "pull the trigger " sort of speak.

Colt 1911 model 70 gold cup or gold cup trophy.
Pros: ammo is readily available and cheap ammo can be found. there is a 22lr conversion making 1 gun in to two and also makes it cheaper to shoot. with time you can upgrade it to be a real precision gun. great for self defense but not a great hunting back up gun.

Colt Python Blue 6 inch. first time i saw it and held it i knew it was a gun i must have. shoots 357 and 38 special making it cost effective. its a gun that will only become more expensive and honestly the best looking one of the 3.
I would prefer to buy it first but as an NYC resident i have time restrictions (only have 30 days to buy a gun) and if i cant find one for reasonable price and in decent condition i might have to leave it for later when i have more funds ( i see them from 1200-3000 and i have about 1200-1300 to spend right now).

and S&W 29-2 ( i am looking at 6.5 Dirty Harry gun but 8 3/8 is fine too) its great example of what S&W quality used to be its pinned and recessed. 44 is a round that will put a hippo down and it can also shoot 44 special. it not only will serve as back up but it can serve as the main hunting weapon. its the cheapest of the 3 but ammo is about the same as 45 acp. i will be hand loading soon not to mention that i will be buying marlin CB in 44 and its nice to have few guns in the same caliber.

one of the main reasons i am having this dilemma is due to the availability of guns in NYC, so "putting all my eggs in one basket" will leave me asking NYPD for an extension of my purchase order. i need to have few choices.

what do you guys think about my choices. pros? cons?

i been to few stores today and based on what i saw there are 2 guns to consider.
early 80s colt python in 98% condition. timing is good there is a small mark on it where the scope was touching the frame but other than that its pristine. appears to be shot very little its also the same price as hard chrome colt 1911 government special combat. also it almost new condition.not sure how old but probably about 4-5 years old. both guns are 1350-1400. what do you guys think?

They all sound good to me. Once you have your NYC permit are you limited to the number of guns you can buy? Do you need permission for each one?
I am upstate and don't know much about NYC laws. I avoid the place like the plague.

If your only going to be useing it as a hunting backup I wouldn't get the blue Python, I'd go Stainless Steel. If your going to be useing it mostly for SD then deff go with the 1911, and will work in a pinch for backup hunting. I've owned all 3 and I loved the Python, but the blue is easy to scratch. I had the 29-2 in the 8 3/8" bbl, it was a great shooter but also a bit on the heavy side. The 1911, what can you say that hasn't been said already. Get the 1911 first, that way when you get your CCW you'll aready have a great gun for that.

Jim- No but there is a time restriction just like there is with long guns ( 1 every 90 days) with hand guns its a bit more involved. every 3 month you can request a purchase order where you have to specify the caliber you want. if you get approved ( takes about 2 weeks for approval ) you have 30 days to make a purchase. and then you have 72 hours to bring your firearm for inspection.

Dude you need to move to Texas, where all you have to do is walk into any gun store , pick out what you want show your ID and CC permit, if you have one, fill out the 4473, pay your money and go home with it. No taking it in for approval except by "She Who Must Be Obeyed".:D

been to most of them however they dont have any 29-2 or pythons. there are few colts. problem with NYC there isn't much hunting around here and no need for big caliber guns. when i go to a range most people shoot 9s or 40 or 20 cal in long guns

As I think everyone should own a 1911 I'd start there. They are just a very fun gun and round. Great for self defense and and hunting back-up too.

Lots of luck with the other two, ;)

Some great choices and I would not disagree on any of them.

You might open yourself up on the Model 29 and think about 41 magnum.

Not as popular, you can't shoot 44 special in it, but its likely to be a better buy and it has all the power you could ever want.

I had a 44 and sold it and got the 41 magnum. Better penetration as it was a woods gun.

I also found the recoil was a lot better even at full loads and I could load down and shoot the end of the left front foot off a grasshopper at 25 yards (it was more accurate than the 44).

I made up my mind and left a deposit on a 1981 colt python 6 inch blue. Condition as great. Only few marks where original owner had a clip on scope mount ( 3 hair line scratches one one left and 2 on the right) otherwise it's mint. And it came with original wooden grips but no box. Super excited can't wait to go shoot it. Now I need a shoulder rig. Sure is an expensive hobby.

Sounds like you got what you wanted at a price you wanted. It makes no difference what we suggest because, in the end, you're the only one that counts.

I have had a 1976 Colt gold Cup since new and I can't say anything bad about it but I have a 2009 Dan Wesson Pointman in 45 acp and the Dan Wesson is in every way is far superior to the Gold Cup. The Pointman is so close "if not equal" in fit and finish to the Wilson 1911s I have shot" My friend has two and I have put lots of rounds through them" . The Model 29 is big.

If price is an issue, you can't go wrong with a S&W 686 or a Ruger GP-100....great guns & you'll have money left for your next purchase.
