Tikka T3 CTR scope recommendation

Having collected mostly older C&R bolt actions, I'm very new to scopes. I bought myself a Tikka T3 Scout CTR and I need some purchasing assistance. What are some appropriate rings for a Picatinny rail and a scope recommendation in the 2-9x range. What else do I need to buy?

Thanks.

Man... that is a seriously open ended question. You've got dozens of choices for both bolt-on and QD rings, and even greater scope selections.

  • How much money you want to spend?
  • You need an illuminated reticle?
  • What kind of reticle? Crosshair, mildot, BDC, special?
  • You need "side focus" parallax adjustment?
  • 1" or larger tube diameter?
  • Any eye relief issues that warrant extended (more than 3.5 inches) eye relief?

That's just a short, large item list... the little stuff ads even more variables. See where I'm goin' here?

Cheers,

I'm now reminded why I never got into scopes. ;)
Why can't there be just one kind of ring that works?

Well, distance is generally not going to be more than 300 yards. Money for a scope would be around $400. I imagine a 1" tube is normal, right? It is for target practice, plinking, fun, etc. No hunting. Being a .308, I imagine some decent eye relief would be safe.

I don't know about the other questions.

Lots of choices. Bushnell Elite, Leupold VX3, Meopta, Minox, Nikon Monarch, Sightron Big Sky, Weaver Grand Slam, Zeiss Conquest.
There are probably just as many choices for rings.

I'll say Leupold VX3 3.5-10X40. There's a rebate that gets it to $400. Warne Maxima low 1" rings.

How does one pick the rings for a Picatinny rail? Are they all pretty much the same (functionally) but priced different based on quality? Or are there any feature differences?

Thanks.

  • Material... ally or steel. Aluminum is fine for most.
  • Height... low to high. Unless you have a really long head, as low as possible... as determined by the objective bell diameter and turret block (if any) clearance.
  • Number of pinch screws. Four seems to be the norm these days, both 1913 and tube... though as few as 2 and as many as 6 are out there.
  • Quick detach or... not so quick. Self-explanatory.
  • Price... you get what you pay for. Both rings machined from a common stock or common centers is better than castings.
