Tiger rips off volunteer's arm at animal refuge near Kiowa (Colorado)

Not gun related, but too rich not to share. Sorry if I sound hard-hearted, for it is a tragedy to be sure, but PETA-type Reality Checks have a habit of being nasty. My brain is hurting as the following thoughts clamor to be first in line:

There was a young lady from Niger
Who smiled as she rode on a tiger
After the ride
she was inside
and the smile was on the face of the tiger.

Tiger rips off volunteer's arm at animal refuge near Kiowa

Woman was attempting to demonstrate to guest that animal was tame; her condition critical

By Kevin Vaughan
Denver Rocky Mountain News Staff Writer

KIOWA — A volunteer at an animal refuge had her right arm torn off Saturday by a bengal tiger as she apparently tried to show a visitor that the animal was tame.

The 28-year-old woman was flown to Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, where she was in critical condition Saturday evening and undergoing surgery for her injuries.

"I think a mistake was made, and it was a costly one," said Elbert County Sheriff Jeff Shaw.

A woman who answered the phone at the Prairie Wind Animal Refuge late Saturday afternoon said owner Michael Jurich was not available and hung up.

Jurich opened the center, northeast of Kiowa, as a home for refugees from zoos, fur farms and hunting clubs. It houses scores of animals, including lions, tigers and bears.

An AirLife crew left the refuge with the woman at 2:24 p.m., hospital spokeswoman Sara Spaulding said.

The woman's name was withheld while her husband tried to reach other family members Saturday evening.

The refuge has a license from the Colorado Division of Wildlife, Shaw said. Roughly 20 people were at the refuge when the woman was injured.

He said the Denver woman, who has been a volunteer at the center for six years, was talking about the animals with a visitor. She was asked whether the refuge's operators ever had problems with people sticking their hands in the cages.

"She stuck her hand in, and one of the bengal tigers came up to her and licked her hand," Shaw said. "She scratched its nose."

Then the 2-year-old, fully grown tiger grabbed onto the woman's hand, holding it tightly at first but not breaking the skin. Within moments, it moved further up the woman's arm, biting, and finally ripped off the limb at the shoulder.

The woman's arm was not found, Shaw said.

The folks from OZ probably have some great stories about human stupidity with the Great Whites and crocs.

Big cats, when raised in captivity, are extremely tame. Just as tame as a house cat. They would never survive in the wild, they are afraid of chickens even. But, they are playful ;) The tiger probably thought it was just playing :)

Maybe she looked like a big ball of yarn to the little puddy-tat. They should play with the snakes instead, at least they have anti-venom for those.

Will they now kill the tigers, since they now know how good human meat tastes and how easy it is to acquire?

G-Freeman,

Now *THAT*, Sir, is a quotable quote!!!

Stick it to 'em! RKBA!

I have always wanted a Tiger. I think they make all dogs look like wimps...wonder if I could get a good deal on that kitty?

The landlord might not appreciate it. Hmm...don't see a single mention of "Bengal Tiger" in the lease so I should be in the clear.

Now if I can just find a deal on an Orca.

I can think of two things to say:

"Bet that hurt"

And:

"That'll leave a mark"

i see this differently replace the accidental dismemberment by the tiger with a gun accident. i know the owner of the place in question. mike jurich has been taking in unwanted animals for years (of the predator/large game type) alot of his support comes from people who donate cash & food to him.for anyone who has seen an american furniture warehouse commercial the tigers are furnished by mike. he once brought in a mountain lion to where i work that was found wandering lost in city limits. mike and his family are definately not tree huggers but do for game/predator's what some folks due for any other unwanted animal. and though it has been awhile since i last saw him (different part of the state) he was a pro-gun guy.

IT HOUSES SCORES OF ANIMALS, INCLUDING LIONS, TIGERS, AND BEARS.

Oh my!

It's a horrible situation but I can't help flashing back to Monty Python's THE MEANING OF LIFE. The one-liners are endless...

Hmmm, tastes like chicken.

She's through lending a helping hand to strays.

The tiger was just practicing his latest disarming technique.

I heard of a similar case in Egypt where a crocodile got a woman's arm. The croc was captured and killed and when the woman got out of the hospital she ate the crocodile. Now THAT'S style!

Update. Common sense prevails, but . . . bold italics mine.

Tiger who attacked woman at animal refuge will be spared

'I don't want it to be put down,' victim says

By M.E. Sprengelmeyer
Denver Rocky Mountain News Staff Writer

AGATE — A tiger who ripped off a woman's arm at a wildlife refuge will be allowed to live.

Prosecutors for Elbert County said Wednesday that it will not seek a vicious-animal complaint against Boris, a 2-year-old Bengal tiger who attacked a woman who reached into his cage at Prairie Wind Animal Refuge Saturday.

Renee Black, 28, of Aurora, lost most of her right arm in the incident, but she wants the tiger to live.

"I love the tiger to death, and I don't want it to be put down," she said, declining further comment. She is recovering at Swedish Medical Center.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife and the U.S. Department of Agriculture continue their investigation of facility conditions and licensing questions, but they have no jurisdiction to seek the animal's death.

Elbert County Sheriff Jeff Shaw said it would not make sense.

"The animal is just a wild animal," Shaw said. "It's something that needs to be treated as a wild animal, not a pet.

"He was where he was supposed to be, and someone intruded through the cage that probably shouldn't have done that."

The final decision on the tiger's fate is left to refuge owner Michael Jurich, who could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Volunteer Jim Chandler said Jurich plans to let the animal live.

"Michael plans, if they will let him, to build a new cage way out away from anyone else and put the tiger out there," Chandler said.

District attorney spokesman Mike Knight said his office reviewed the sheriff's investigation but found no evidence of criminal negligence.

"We are not conducting any investigation regarding this incident at this time, and we're not taking any action to seek the destruction of this tiger," Knight said.

That does not stop the investigations by state and federal officials. Department of Agriculture inspectors are trying to determine whether the facility was exhibiting animals without a valid license. Jurich canceled his long-standing exhibiting permit earlier this year. Volunteers said the center then stopped opening the refuge to photography groups and tours.

Refuge volunteers said that everyone who was at the refuge Saturday was either a volunteer or an employee.

According to Shaw, at the time of the incident, Black was showing a man the tiger's cage Saturday when he asked if the refuge had a problem with people sticking their hands in the cages. He said Black then reached inside the cage, scratched the tiger on the nose and, within moments, had her arm pulled off by the animal.

It's to bad the volunteer got dis-armed.
Its also a big problem that Boris has successfully eaten Human flesh.

Ain't no way i'm going anywhere near Boris.

That kitty is saying to his cage mates "They taste just like chicken"

Imagine the headlines if Boris escapes.

Sounds similar tot he story I heard of a few months ago in Central TX. Man buys tiger cub and keeps it caged on his property. Uses it as an attraction for the heighborhood kids. One day when dad not around kid sticks hand into cage to pet tiger. Guess what happens next? People like these just go to show that the gene pool does indeed have a shallow end. Believe it or not, the tiger in question was bought at a road side. What can go through the mind of someone buying a tiger. "Gee I bet Billy-Joe-Bob wont be so proud of his pit bull now?!"

Last night in a TV program on "Animal Planet", it was claimed that there are more "pet" tigers in Miami than there are remaining in India. (An ego-trip thing, doncha know...)

Whether factually correct or not, it does mean that Miami is bum-deep in tiger poop--and at some time these animals will probably be either killed or candidates for such as Mr. Jurich's operation.

Back in the 1950s I was taken aback one day in Paris when I saw a guy driving along in his Peugeot convertible with a black leopard, a tiger, and one other big cat. I read a few years later that one of the cats had done him in.

Some people have weird notions about what are pets!

You can not take the "wild" out of a wild animal no matter how or where it is raised.

I am sure that a large number of you realize that the shallow end is becoming much the larger part of the gene pool.

If you're not a little upset with the way the world is going, you're not paying attention.

A bit off topic, and I'll be accused of being in the wrong end of the pool, but they have succesfully taken DNA from extinct Tazmanian Tiger remains. These are NOT tigers, but marsupial "wolves". Anyway, I admit I'd LOVE to have one, though don't know enough about what the clone would act like to follow through. Pretty cool though.
