Thunderzap Ammo ?

Hello,
I was reading the various posts re: BAT 9mm. which I have a couple of boxes and saw mention of Thunderzap Ammo. I think that they are long out of business but I have a couple of boxes. .38 Special +P with a 32 gr. white nylon bullet. Flat tip with a deep funnel shaped hollow point. Velocity was supposed to be about 2600 fps from a 2" brl -2800 fps from a 4" - 3000 fps from a 6" brl. My cases are headstamped FC87 and probably were purchased around 1988. I have never shot the stuff but at close range it was advertised to be vicious stuff? It would lose velocity at a very rapid rate due to the light weight but at 5-10 ft. it would be really rolling. I also have some Kasner Turbo Grabber .38spl ammo which feature black ABS plastic bullets with a hollow point and little teeth at the front edges. The guy told me that they go about 4000 fps and weigh 13 gr. No recoil at all due to the very light weight. Never tried these either but am curious on how effective these ultra velocity lightweight bullets would perform at close range on human targets? Come to think of it I also have some .38 spl. ammo with 40 gr. teflon coated Alumnium bullets called Equaloy brand. Lots of fun old stuff! Non P+ and rated around 2200 fps.

Yeah - I remember this stuff - Drastically effective at close range but wont fly past 100 yards. I can see this used the the TOTAL TITANIUM revolvers from Taurus. Decent Belly-Gun ammo.
I remember a photo of a slab of beef that was hit with the THUNDERZAP round at a range of 3 feet. HORRID WOUND! Just Ugly!
I suspect that it would have been most effective on an attacker... and yet safe for the objects beyond the target... with no chance of over penetration.

TZ was also made in .45 ACP. My home protection ammo. It was sold by or thru Second Chance Body Armor, but was not part of SC. I know the inventor of the ammo. (He also made up some 12 gauge slugs, gawd awful stuff)

ThunderZap was conceived and marketed by Rich Davis, President of Second Chance Body Armor. ThunderZap was on the market very briefly in the late '80s and early '90s. It consisted of a white plastic bullet propelled at very high velocity. On impact it fragmented completely, penetrated about 2 inches and produced a permanent cavity that was about 2 inches in diameter.

Does anybody remember the old Bingham "Exploder" ammo. It took Winchester 41 mag soft points, drilled a hole in the bullet nose and inserted some powder, capped it off with a primer, and sealed it with a yellow laquer.

Whatever happened? Did they outlaw it's import or even just the possession of it alone?

Did anyone ever hear of it's performance in defensive use?

I think the .22 Exploder ammo was used in the Reagan assasination attempt.

I wish to correct something that Shawn said in his posting, I have had an e-mail discussion with him on this and he knows that I will be doing this, so don't think I am trying to flame him. If he had not given the go ahead, I would not be posting the following.

While Richard Davis and Second Chance Body Armor did market Thunderzap ammunition it was not invented by Rich. Bruce McArthur, Clarkston, MI was the inventor and patent holder of the ThunderZap ammunition. The ammunition was manufactured by a separate company that was made up of Bruce, Rich Davis, Karen Davis (Rich's wife of the time) and Bill Stenbeck. While the company is now dissolved, Bruce still holds all the patents on the ammunition and any other ammunition that may be constructed of the same materials.

As an aside: Bruce has made experimental rounds of TZ in 12 gauge, .45 Colt and .50 BMG. IIRC the .45 TZ had a 47 grain HP bullet that moved out at 2,000+ FPS, but I could be off on the MV.

In the book "Unintended Consequences" the main character Henry Bowman used something like this ammo, I'll bet thats where the author got the idea.

Thanks for bringing this error to everyone's attention and for correcting it. :)

Speaking of the old Exploder Ammo. I got some once in .380 - 9mm. - .38 spl - .44 Mag. it came in six round boxes in foam packing with holes for each round. it had a primer in the nose of the hollow point sealed with red lacquer. Never tried it out. Is it now illegal even to own it? From a time long past!
