thumbs forward grip ?

Hi everyone. Okay so I have been looking thru some threads here on this subject and saw a picture posted by MrBorland which shows thumb forward grip the same as I use. I understand the potential dangers of this when using a revolver but I find for me it is a matter of necessity as a traditional thumbs down grip prevents me from completing the trigger pull thru it's full motion.

I have to basically grip with thumb and fore finger ( maybe ring finger as well )of my off hand to actuate trigger using recommended grip which obviously does not give me solid support.

I was just curious if anybody else uses thumbs forward because of this specific reason or am I really that much of a freak ;)

very hard for me to understand what you are talking about. I will say that REGARDLESS of how you grip the handgun--when shooting a revolver KEEP ANY PART OF THE HAND AWAY FROM THE CYLINDER GAP OF THE WEAPON. Other than that caution note use what ever grip procedure that allows you to shoot accurately.

As a rule of thumb, no pun intended, you want to keep your thumbs away from the cylinder gap when shooting revolvers. Although many competitive revolver shooters use a thumb forwards grip in competition but they are shooting .38 special which doesn't have near enough force to blow a chunk off your thumb like the big boomers. I have even done this with super hot .357's and the most I got was a lightly burnt thumb with some powder residue embedded into my thumb. If you often shoot large magnum rounds I wouldn't get into the practice of it, but if you feel you have enough discipline to stick to a thumb forwards grip when only shooting .38 special or say .45acp out of a revolver than that is up for you to decide.

but I find for me it is a matter of necessity as a traditional thumbs down grip prevents me from completing the trigger pull thru it's full motion.

This used to happen to me when I first started shooting J frames. As I was pulling the trigger back my thumb would get in the way. Adjust your grip and you will eventually get used to it.

I'm not getting this. Got a pic?

When using a standard grip, my trigger finger can hit my thumb(s) during the trigger pull, but I adjust my trigger finger placement, or my thumbs a little to make room. Still a pretty standard grip, though.

As far as a thumbs-forward grip, Dragline45 offered a pretty balanced opinion. I do it by choice, and I do happen to shoot competitively. The thumbs-forward grip helps recoil control, and seems more neutral, so the front sight comes back to it's starting position on it's own. I also keep my thumbs off the gun entirely, which helps accuracy.

I shoot revolvers using a "revolver grip," not "thumbs forward," and I have no problem with any part of my support hand interfering with trigger pull. I'm having difficulty even envisioning how this could be the case.

It can depend on the size and shape of the gun.
Bigger guns allow thumbs forward and smaller ones may not.
Using a high hold, with the web of the hand as high as possible, can help with using the thumbs down grip.
But it pays to know how to use both types of holds depending on the gun.
