Thumb Piece Nut

I have an S&W 629. I tried to tightend the thumb piece Nut on
the thumbpiece, thinking it was loose. I hand tightened with a screw driver and it
seemed to have marred the nut itself. Is the metal on that part
"soft".
 
Soft ? Not really. Not hardened tho. Proper fit of screwdriver for any gun screw is a must if one is to avoid marring screws and fitments.

Proper fit and good quality screwdrivers belong in dedicated gun gear stash. If it fits side plate screw, don't use it to pry lid off of paint can....etc.

Sorry you buggered the nut, at least replacements are available and not terribly pricey.

The nut has its threads on the inside, and they mate with the stem that protrudes from the back of the bolt itself. It is very easy to overtighten this and stretch the nut itself, ruining it.(Ask me how I know:)).
