thumb break

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

im getting a holster custom made, i can get it with a thumb break or without . now im use to open top holsters for ease of reholstering with one hand . seems like the flap would get in the way. just seems unatural and slow with a thumb break. xdm 40 doesnt decock and i dont want my offhand in the muzzle . ill weigh the pros and cons before it's made. i dont carry . im using it for target pratice and in home defense so it seems open might be better . i like to draw and reholster on the range . unless someone has a magical trick on pullin the flap with one hand .

I use open top and thumb break holsters, among others, interchange them as necessary, and have for years. You'd likely need a timer to tell the difference in my time on target (open top to thumb break) and I never, ever, ever rely on my support hand to re-holster with either style.

Want a thumb break? Fine. Practice with it to the point of unconscious familiarity. Like all things, you'll only get out of it what you put into it.

Now, that said, does it sound as if you need a thumb break holster given what you have shared? No. Would getting one anyway be an unsound decision? No.

I prefer not to have the thumb break on my holsters. My holster for 635 MG has one, which I like for field carry, but I notice I have to guide the strap away with my thumn or ot gets caught up on the hammer during drawing. I'm comfortable with this in the field/woods, since I don't think I will have to draw as quickly (most instances would be to scare an animal way.)

For everday concealed carry, I like no thumb-break for a faster, less to worry about, draw. All of my holsters retain the gun well enough that it doesn't move in the holster w/o a good tug anyway.

I will say this; one advantage to a thumb-break for cc is that is lessens the chance of a pick-pocket nabbing your gun. I am usually pretty aware of who comes that close to me, and avoid crowded areas, so I am not too worried about it.
