Throw away gun?

Got a general question? You are all shocked, I can tell. :D

I want to get a "car gun". Something that can bounce around with my calipers, tape, CD's etc and I am not gonna worry about it.
I shot a "Carpati 380" a couple of weeks ago. Kinda cool and Kinda not cool. For those who dont know, its kinda like a cross between a CZ 50 and a Walther PPK copy. The trigger in s/a was nice and d/a was absolutely hard, grinding and a joke. Other than that, for the $ the gun seemed solid. It shot 100 mixed rnds without a hitch and it plenty accurate. Its a good compromise gun IMO...good enough to depend on (at least the one I shot) and cheap enough not to be overly concerned about abuse/taken as evidence......

What are your thoughts.....thanks.

Shoot well

I think if I wanted a good solid dependable weapon that I could count on ever time, I would have to get one of the Makarovs you see being sold for $99.00. They are listed as "very good condition", you know they go bang every time you pull the trigger. And for $99.00 you could afford to carry it in your tool box if needed.;)

Eric,

I don't know anything about the particular pistol you mentioned, but it sounds like it has a similar trigger to a PA-63.

If I understand you correctly, it's to be used as a last ditch effort in case of a dire emergency.
If this is the case, I don't think you will have any qualms with the heavy trigger considering the amount of adrenaline likely to be coursing through you in such an event.

Sounds like a fine candidate for what you're looking for, as would be an $89 PA-63.
Personally, I would opt for a nice 5 shot snubnose revolver by the likes of Taurus or older Rossi for a tacklebox gun. Revolvers by nature are low maintenance. My M85 serves this exact function in my Lumina, and a Llama Minimax resides in my Grand Wagoneer. They certainly lend a peace of mind.

Good luck.

I agree with the comment about the Mak. For a reliable gun that's also inexpensive, you'll search for a while to come up with a better choice than the Mak.

Throw away?

I picked up on my Bersa Md83 .380 just for this reason. It was used and in good shape, it's reliable as any of my expensive guns and I'm not overly concerned as to what happens with it. I do take care of it as I would any other but I'd rather lose that one instead of my Glock ;)

I just use my GLOCK 19 because it is already scratched up from my holster. In addition, I want to use a good, quality handgun if I'm going to defend myself, not a cheap POS just because it'll be confiscated by the police. It's not worth the risk to go cheap.

I'd hardly call Makarovs or PA63's POS. Just because they come from Eastern Europe hardly makes them so. Inexpensive, yes. Cheap, no. If the Makarov was made in the west, it would have cost 2-3 times as much.

The criteria ask for in a pistol was "Something that can bounce around with my calipers, tape, CD's etc and I am not gonna worry about it", not something that would be confiscated by the police.

Eric, I guess our friend here didn't read your "It's all good" thread. What do you think?

Taklebox or tool box gun should have some protection from the other stuff in the box. Not for cosmetic reasons......for function reasons. box holster ?

I'm not familiar with the gun, but I would not consider 100 rounds through a gun to be a test of reliability. Will it break when you need it most?

No it wont break. Its basically the equivalent to an FEG smc 380 in price and function. I little inexpensive 380 single stack. Its a good gun....I am just throwing around the idea....I appreciate all input....

2kiddad, I quess not.....shoot well

The FEG-pa63,makarov,and SMC-380 would all be good choices as would a compact Hi-Point (this is the gun nobodys ever shot or held but love to hate)9mm.It has a polymer frame which is nice for your intended use.

Ok....let's call the Makarov a less-expensive alternative...it is definetly not a "cheap" gun (as in Jennings).

My car gun is a Makarov, one that I have added MMC sights to, a Pearce grip, Nolan Hi-Drop, etc. Not that it needed any of those options to function as a defensive weapon, it was more of a project gun.

I know that I can toss it under the seat, or throw it in the glovebox, or in my briefcase & the worst that is going to happen is I scratch the finish on a $125 base gun that will definetly stand up to the abuse & go BANG everytime it is supposed to. Admittedly, in a caliber that is about the minimum I would want in a defensive gun, but if I need to pull it in my car we will be talking fairly close range anyway.

Do with a Mak in 9x18...u won't regret it.

Does it have to be a semi-auto?

Seems to me that the perfect choice would be a used 3" stainless revolver. You could bang it around and you wouldn't have to worry about it breaking at the worst time.

You could even get it in a decent caliber, too.. :D

I would agree with everything said. For inexpensive (since it will take a beating), sturdy (since it will take a beating) and reliable (since you want to use it to save your life should that be necessary) a FEG PA63, Makarov or used revolver seem to be the best bets. All these can be had for under $200.

If you are willing to go a little higher I'd also suggest a Ruger as they are very rugged, reliable and accurate while still being inexpensive. The Ruger autos are nice and available in very effective chamberings (9mm, .40 and .45 ACP). For strength you can't beat a Ruger revolver (and a .357 mag or a .44mag loaded with .44 spl would be great for self defense).

...Save yourself some frustration and get the Mak. But be sure you lock the door. It won't be long before you question yourself for leaving it there, as 9x18mm Maks usually become favorites. Then you'll have to find another gun to leave in the car.
