Three Walthers to choose from

After going through some searching. I'm down to three Walther handguns that I will choose one from

The P-38 or P1
The P-5
or the P99

All in 9mm Parabellum

Which one is best?

Any help would be most appreciated.

I'd vote for the P99 as well. The P1/P-38 is showing its age, the P5 is kinda heavy compared to the modern plasticannons as well as being difficult to get parts for. The P99 would be the most useful, IMHO.

What else?

Walther P99. Manufactured in Germany. I suggest the Military model. Not only are they stylish...but not too many ppl liked 'em from what I heard, so you can usually finagle a good price out of the dealers.

Plasticannons?

Well that is a good one, as opposed to "combat tupperware" Never owned a polymer-framed weapon. All my other pistols are steel, a S&W Military and Police circa 1940 and an E. German Makarov. Not afraid of polymers nor am I opposed to buying one.

Good Lord, you would make an ultimatum like that to a Walther collector!

I have to agree with the others about the P1/P.38. It is still a great pistol, but I think it's time is past.

The P5 is the finest, along with the Sig-Sauer P225, single stack ever to come out of Germany.

I like the P99 too. Modern, functional, large capacity. It's a tough choice.

The machinework and fitting of the P5 is second to none. The grip is fantastic and has a lot of "cool factor" going for it. Same with the P99.

Flip a coin! I couldn't make this decision. I bought them both. Actually all three, or rather four.:D

It's like the old Lay's potato chip commercial, "I betcha can't have just one".

Personally, I'd START with the P99. It is one sweet pistol in either the .40 or 9mm. Another Walther classic waiting to happen. Hi-cap(standard) mags are still available, albeit a touch expensive. Your second Walther will be the tough choice. P5, P38, PP, PPK, have you looked at the P88s...............??

WHADDA MEAN "PICK ONE"? Actually, that is a very cruel question.

why one

Two reasons why I only want one: One, on a limited budget, I have some set aside to buy a Walther, but not enough. Two, I can only buy one handgun a month in this state (Virginia) So, by the time I'll have enough, my 30 days will be up

MY choices in order:

1) P-99
2) P-5
3) P-38

I own the P-99 and the P-5. Both are excellent quality IMHO.

Chris i would then buy the p99 in 9mm

im not sure what ur going to use it for

9mm are cheaper to shoot for practicing
and with some +p ammo also good for self defense.

the gun just fits awesome

Your intended use should be the final arbiter but you've unfortunately not told us if this is a CCW, home defense piece, safe queen, etc.

If it's just to fill out the collection, I'd probably go for the P5. I'm very biased towards single stack 9mms. I would be interested in the P5 primarily since it is such a beautiful piece of machinery. I personally love my P5C. The P99 is something that should be available for a while to come, but the P5 and P5C are difficult to come by, increasingly expensive, and something of a conversation starter.

If it's a budget collectable/shooter, the P1 would certainly be worth having. Considering that you can pick up a P1 for well under $450 from SOG or Century right now, it strikes me as an attractive deal.

The P99 is, from everything I've heard and read, a first rate contemporary defensive pistol. If your envisioned use is personal defense, I think I'd grudgingly give the nod to the P99. It's design, functionality with modern defensive ammunition, and durability would trump the concealability of the P5.

Just my $0.02. Please let us know what you choose.

What a decision!! I wish I had to make this decision.

For me it would depend on what I wanted the gun for. If you want it for collectability than the P5 followed by the P.38 would be my choice. If you want a defensive gun than P99 all the way, than P5.

If I walked into that gun store and saw that, I'd probably be walking out with all three. :) Although, if I only had money for one I would take the P5, because I don't have one right now.

P99

Reasons

I've tried a few non-Walther 9mm pistols Beretta, Browning, FEG, Ruger and all are nice, but don't fit me. I need a primary weapon., the P-38/P-1 fits my hand the best as does the P-5. Never tried the P-99, no one has one, as its a popular. Glock doesn't work for me, not that balenced to me. For CCW, I have a Makarov in 9x18

Chris try the HS2000 by Intrac

its like $285-$310

its the best fitting gun i own in 9mm an

shoots better than my glock also more comfortable
stacks right up there with my Sigs

check it out www.hsarms.com

I own all three and my favorite is the P-5 . I like the P-1I just bought & my PPK's then my P-99. I do mot like the trigger on the P-99 at all. I would have liked the P-99QA much better. To me the feel of the P-5 is next to perfect for my hand. My vote is the P-5 much better quality than many firearms out there. I carry my gun in a Blade tech IWB holster. I am a lefty to boot. I put in wolfs 8 lb springs in my gun and carry 127 +P+ ammo which shines in this gun it just loves this stuff, super accurate and no malfunctions of any kind. Choose wisely grasshopper.;)
