Three Revolvers...

So in my house, there's a rule. I'm only allowed three guns. This excludes any gifts or inheritances. This rule was decided after much compromise and under the table dealing.

I currently have a S&W Model 10, a Bersa .380, and a Baikal side-by-side 12 gauge.

I'm thinking of drastically changing my arsenal. First, I shoot the Bersa great, but like any small auto, it has feed problems. I don't trust it. Second, I'm cross-dominent (right hand, left eye). That means, I have to shoot the shotty left-handed to even get close to being fast, and despite practicing A LOT, I'm just not quick enough with it.

So I think I'm going to move to three handguns. I want medium sized revolver like my Model 10, a small revolver, and... something else.

So I'm thinking my first is my Model 10, eventually replaced with another 4 inch K-Frame S&W in .357 and stainless.

My second, which will be my next purchase, is the one I'm up in the air about. It will be my CCW gun. I love the idea of the Ruger LCR, and love the trigger on it. But part of me thinks that maybe another S&W K-Frame with a 2 inch barrel is the way to go. I do know that I'm not sold on J-Frames, but I'm not against hearing someone out.

The third gun is really tricky. Part of me thinks, get something big that you can hunt with should the need ever arise, a .44 Mag or a .500. The other part of me says stick with the shotty, you idiot. The last part says get a .22 in the same frame as my carry gun.

I just don't know... Any help would be appreciated.

If I could have only 3, I would not skimp on quality or price, and get three that serve different purposes.

Freedom Arms 454 Cassul with fitted 45 colt cylinder for hunting and fun
Ruger SP101 357 mag (2") for CCW and HD (a Ruger LCR would be an option also)
S&W 617 (4") 22lr for ....well everyone needs a 22lr

I think I'd be getting lots of gifts:D.

Queen Bee: "Is that a new gun?!?"
Me: "Yes honey, my boss, you remember Bill, he said he appreciated my hard work and dedication so much he gave me a new AR as a bonus.... no, I don't know why the credit card bill is so high this month...":p

Seriously though, I'd make it count if I could only have three. Be sure you'll actually shoot a .22 before you make that one of the three; I find I rarely touch my rimfires. A 44 Magnum would be a good option. A Model 19 is another good choice for a a K frame. You could also leave a Korth price list laying in strategic places, a casual mention that that might be your next purchase might help lift the Three Gun Embargo:cool:.

I think the first thing I'd do is work on changing the rules. The I'd buy what I wanted that fit my budget.

Three guns or 3 rifles ,3 pistols, 3 revolvers and 3 shotguns? Just kidding. I would want at least one long gun for myself. Realistically probably a shotgun a rifle and one pistol if it was me.

Sell the guns and buy some BALLS ... In my house I provide for my family. And I don't tell my wife how many shoes she can have and she don't tell me how many guns I can have ...

Why not four? Or 3.5, the .22 is half!

3?

Three?

Revolvers?

Perfect!

I'd go with the pefect compromise, an Ruger SP101/.357

The third gun is really "tricky". Part of me thinks, get something big that you can hunt with should the need ever arise, a .44 Mag or a .500. The other part of me says stick with the shotty, you idiot. The last part says get a .22 in the same frame as my carry gun.

You see, (if I'm not wasting my time) your screwed on that one. Sounds like you need a .22 more than a .44mag. A .22 will take down that paper target just as good as the .44. God forbid you run into a Water Buffalo with your 22, you might scare him with the noise.

Good for you Vladan, I think I remember OP asking you how you ran your house you big stud. OP, got to know what's up with the 3 gun rule? How did this come about?

I think I would keep the model 10 for a while, until you get your other two sorted out. Drop the Bersa like its hot and get yourself a 1911, maybe a commander size that you can carry. Then I would dump the Baikal and get a Browning or Beretta over under. Then after getting those two I would sell the 10 and get a really nice Colt .357 maybe a king cobra. spend at least a grand on each gun. If you can only have three guns, they ought to be nice.

Since you are limited to 3 guns, by choice, and you seem content with the shotgun, that only leaves two.

If you have a desire to do anything sporting with a handgun (leaving aside combat type shooting matches) then get a Contender. Or its bigger cousin, the Encore.

True, they are only single shots, but the are the most versatile guns around, one shot at a time. All popular pistol, and many useful rifle calibers can be had as spare barrels, from .22LR up to .45-70 in the Contender, and some magnum calibers in the Encore. ONE GUN, a dozen barrels (or more, if you want) sounds to me like a very good gun for your situation.

Which leaves your third choice....this should be your personal, home, and carry defensive firearm. Med size .357 is a good choice, not too big to carry (even if not optimal,) and big enough to be counted on (.357mag). Shoots .38s for practice. Hard to beat that combo, unless you need a hideout or a duty piece.

...When she's not around.:D

Seriously though, I'd swap the Bersa for another auto either a 1911, a Browning High Power, or maybe even a Springfield XD(M) depending on which you like. The shotgun I'd swap for a big bore revolver think .45 ACP, .45 Colt, .454 Casull. I'd only swap the model 10 if I found a great deal on a .357 S&W. I'm curious as to the 3 gun rule also, how was that # arrived at? I'm fortunate to have a wife that understands my hobby and as long as I don't incur any debt she doesn't have much to say about what I buy.

The logical answer to me is a shotgun, a rifle, and a handgun sufficient for carry and home defense. K-frame sized .357 is perfect.

However, since you don't have a rifle now, you may not want one. In which case I'd go small carry handgun, larger home defense handgun, and shotgun.

Or, if you stay with the medium sized "compromise" handgun, you could get something similar in .22 to practice with.

But, for me, this would be a 12 gauge, a .308, and a .357. Everyone needs a shotgun.

Whew... there are a lot of haters on this thread. I think my balls are the right size. As far as I know, it's the not the 1800s anymore. I like to be open and honest with my wife. The story is that she's extremely scared of guns. She was never around them growing up. To her a gun is a gun, therefore, having one is all you need. I'm working to change her fear, but it will take time. But instead of fighting about it every time I want to buy one, we made a deal. That's called compromise.

I like my women to have jobs and an education, I think it's hot.

Now, on to the topic at hand. My goal with this thread was to find out some compact revolver alternatives. You guys have mentioned the SP101, a Dan Wesson, a small-ish 1911, a couple other options. I'll be looking into all of these.

My second goal was to question the shotgun that I can't get used to shooting. Apparently, there's the overwhelming opinion is to have some sort of long gun. I guess I'll keep the Baikal until I can splurge on a semi-auto. I hate pumps.

Any advice for a cross-dominant shooter?

Have fun with your resentful wives!

I would talk some sense into your wife, if shes allowing guns into the house to begin with it makes absolutely no sense to limit it to a certain number. Quite frankly I would be pretty PO'd and offended by the whole thing. Your a grown man, you pay your share of the bills, it's just as much your house as hers. Because she says so does not mean it has to be so. Sure it saves you an argument but no one said relationships are easy. Just because you two are married to each other does not give either of you the right to give orders to the other at their own whim.

Have fun with your resentful wives!

In this case if I were you I would be resentful. I'm sorry but keeping my girlfriend happy has nothing to do with me following orders from here and bowing at her every whim. We have enough mutual respect and trust for each other that neither would forbid the other from doing something, and if that starts happening its when I find a new girlfriend.

If you are content with the 3 gun rule, I would pick up a Sig 226 in .40, and pick up a .22lr conversion kit as well as a .357 sig conversion kit. That's 3 guns in one right there. For a long arm I would pick up a shotgun of some sort with an interchangeable slug barrel, so you could shoot shot for up close and slugs at long distance. Then I would just get a concealed carry gun of your liking.

Get a S&W Model 63 for your wife. It's an 8-shot stainless steel J-frame in .22lr.

She may even let you shoot it once in a while.
