got a buddy that has a couple of these actions that he plans to use for custom guns... his understanding, is they are as strong as 98 Mausers... anyone have any reason to think they aren't ???
I doubt they'll be as strong simply because of the country of origin. Though I doubt it will make much difference. I think they used to chamber those in .45-70 and other big bore calibers.
I think they were all made in Japan, & Japan has much more history on steel making... in & more complex processes... I think I remember reading that some Arisakas actually had 3 different levels of hardness in a single firing pin...
They are as strong as any 98 Mauser. The metallurgy is very good, and they did not see harsh duty. Siamese Mausers have been used for decades for rifles chambered for rimmed cartridges (45-70, 348, 405 Win, 375 Flanged, etc). I had a Siamese Mauser action for a while, but could never actually decide to take the plunge, finally traded it off to a guy who built a beautiful 45-70 rifle with it.
"I think they used to chamber those in .45-70 and other big bore calibers."
Bigger bore diameter does not equate to higher pressure-the 45/70 is a relatively low pressure cartridge. Operating pressure and bolt thrust are the important specs. Bolt thrust= operating pressure x area of force(base of cartridge).
