Thoughts on an AK.

Hello all.

I need a little assistance regarding an AK-47 that a local shop has. I have looked over past posts about AK's and have found them quite useful, but I need some specifics on this particular one.

The markings on the receiver say it is made it Romania by 'Romarm'. The caliber is listed as 7.62 x 39 (of course) and it says WASR-10 along with some other hard to identify markings. I believe it also says 'Imported by.....' and I can't recall the rest.

The one I looked over was a display model and I thought it had been used, but one of the sales people showed me an identicle one in a box that appeared new. I mean it looked as if it had never been touched. It was covered in goo (cosmoline ?) and had blonde-ish colored wooden stocks. The rear stock was a single piece and looked similar to a thumbhole type stock but actually wasn't. It had 1-10 rd. and 1-30 rd. magazine and a paper wrapped package that I was told contained the sling and a cleaning kit. The box it was in was plain brown cardbord and only had a glued on piece of paper that had the silhouette of the gun and the words: 'Semiautomatic Sporting Rifle'.

Now then, can anyone tell me anything about this based on the aformentioned info? Going rate $, reliability, strength, comparibility to other makes of AK's etc. would all be appreciated, along with any other thoughts and ideas.

I don't have an AK in my collection and I REALLY want one. This just might be chance, but I want some other opinions before laying out any money. Like I said, it looked really, really nice but I don't have enough experience with these things to make an individual judgement.

Many thanks.
Mr. T

I know most Romanian AK's are pretty good, as durable as stamped steel AK's can get. Tell me does it have a scope rail?

Okay!

Lucky for me the gun shop was open until 8 p.m., so I ran by there while doing an errand or two and smoked it over again.

It looks exactly like the one AIMSURPLUS has on their website, stock and all. I also believe it does have a scope rail, if that is what that odd looking protrusion on the left side of it is.

The only thing that has me really confused now is the milled vs. stamped receiver deal. I can't tell if this one is one or the other. I just looked at the receiver types on http://www.ak-47.net and I don't remember enough about the receiver to tell what it is. I'm not sure I could tell if I had it in front of me either.

Thanks again,
T

Stamped AK receivers have a ovalish dimple stamped into them, just above the magwell. Milled AK receivers have a long, ground, dished cut in the same place (lightening cut).

All but some of the US-made AKs should be completely reliable and reasonably accurate.

Sounds good to me as well, as long as the price is not too far from what aim charges. Yes that is a scope mount..."leaperes" makes a mount for it.

I would go for it!

Izzy

Do you have more information on that scope mount? I tried a web search and didn't find anything. Thanks.

The chiniese leapers mount was bought at a gun show. I would try Tapco, Federal Arms corp, CDNN, and others, they might have it...it cost me thirty bucks and is of decent quality.
