Thoughts on Adams & Bennett rifle barrel blanks...

I have many guns that have been rebarreled over the last several years, & they have typically been Douglas or Scheilen barrels... I see Midway stocks alot of Adams & Bennett barrel blanks at extremely reasonable prices...

so... for non benchrest / competition accuracy, ( sporting ) purposes, how about these barrels ??? thinking if my smith does his part during installation, that they seem like a good value...

your thoughts ???

Which rifle?
Their 10/22 barrels are from Green Mountain. (I love mine.)

The centerfires I'm not sure about. Maybe ER Shaw or Wilson?

I would wonder if they'd have as consistent a bore as a Douglas, but I imagine they'd give good accuracy given a decent tight chambering job.

Adams & Bennett barels are a pretty good barrel, not as good as say a Douglas XXX or DGA Shilen Supermatch, but much better than a factory barrel. I have used them on several builds with very good results, and it's hard to argue with the price. I have heard the older ones are Douglas seconds barrels and the newer ones are Green Mountain barrels, but I have no way of knowing for sure.

I've got one on my .375 Ruger and for $75 for an unturned blank it started out as I'm pretty happy. It does foul faster than some of my other barrels but, I cant fire that many rounds before I'm happy to put it down and clean it. It holds about 1.5" at 100 if I'm able to do my job properly at the bench, and I've taken a wounded pronghorn buck at 250+ yards with it. So you will not hear me complain too much, other than a sore shoulder.

thanks for the comments guys... that's the kind of thing I've been looking for... they are obscenely cheap compared to the other offerings...

... I wonder if shooting a couple of the lapping bullets through the barrel could smooth out any of the "roughness" & cut down on the fouling???

i am in the process of building a mauser and i haven't heard anything bad about these barrels. Im curious how they would compare to the similar barrels offered by brownells. The brownells barrels are threaded and shortchambered same as the adam and bennett ones and are the same price give or take 10 bucks. Anybody have any ideal who makes the brownells barrels.

Talk to your gunsmith about your budget. Most will not want to stake their reputations on A&B barrels or the ER Shaw barrel which IIRC is the one thant Brownell's puts their name on. If you are going to build a true custom rifle then spend the money to get a Pac-Nor, Shilen, or such you will not regret it.

Now if you are a hobbyist, and can do most of the work youself then go ahead and use an A&B barrel. I use them on my Savage rifles that I can swap barrels on by myself. I currently don't have any more on hand, but I'm always looking for a deal on a .358 Win or .250 Savage barrel.

FWIW,I found something in the middle ground.I just placed an order for a contour 718 light sporter barrel, pre threaded, long chambered, for a 98 Mauser large ring in cal 30-06 ,on the Lothar Walther web page.
They offer a good price of $219 on these as they make a lot of them.
On the Obermeyer web page,I learned one problem our barrelmakers have is the state of the US steel industry. Its a worthy read.It might suggest something about the value line barrels.

Adams & Bennett barrels

Can I get an unthreaded barrel? I want to build a .375AI Mag on an Enfield P14 action and only for hunting, don't need a $300 Hart barrel, just a shooter. I have an A&B .416 Taylor on a Mauser, their great! I know I can face off the Mauser threads and rethread for the Enfield but hate to lose the 1 inch plus from the chamber profile.

Several months ago, I purchased an A&B barrel from Midway to rebarrel a sportized T-38 Arisaka, which I couldn't get to group. I had a 6.5X57mm Mauser reamer and go gage. My gunsmith threaded, chambered and seated the barrel for $75.00. Last firing for zero before deer gun season, it shot eight rounds into a .8 inch group. I'm very satisfied! Yes it fouls quicker than my Shilen barrels on my F class rifles, but for a shooter and hunting rifle Adams & Bennett barrels are a great buy.
