Thoughts on a 3" SP101? Kit gun/Carry gun/CCW?

Ok, I got a shot at a low-mileage and cheap 3" SP101. I had originally thought about the 2 1/4" version but the price on the 3" is just too good to pass up.

I have had the thought of either a small j-frame or an SP101 for a while now. Goal would be for CCW (need to get my permit but what the hey, gotta have a small firearm to start!), kit/carry for hiking/backup hunting gun, and general plinking.

So, should I run like hell from the 3" and hold out for a 2 1/4" or is the 3" worth the added barrell lenth?

I'd say go for it.

I have a 2 1/4 model. I carry mostly IWB, so barrel length doesn't matter. And when OWB...you're only talking another 3/4 of an inch on an already short gun.

And techincally, you'll have a bit more sight radius, which will help out with aiming and accuracy. I think the extra bbl length would be negligible on velocity, but every little bit helps i guess.

For your stated purposes, I don't think you can beat the 3" version. Mine is a favorite. Low mileage and good price = no brainer to me.

I've got this thing about 3 inch barrelled revolvers. It started with a 3-inch SP101 in .357. About a month after that entirely satisfactory experience, I spied a 3-inch 9mm in the used case. Looked at it. Found it to be in like new condition and bought it. These guns are great for belt carry. Never even considered pocket carry, so the 2 inch version didn't appeal to me much (my 642 is light and serves as an excellent pocket gun).

I say get it if you think the price is so good.
