Thompson Venture

Does anyone have any real experience with a Thompson Venture? I saw one at a local sporting goods store on sale for $489. It came with an adjustable scope and attached bipod and was chambered in .30-06. Is this a good price for this rifle? Are they good rifles? Has anyone fired them? I might be considering buying this rifle but I want some input from anyone who has used one. Thanks in advance.

Nice rifles and accurate, IIRC they come with a better than MOA guarantee. I bought one but have since sold it, just didn't warm up to it enough to replace my current .270 Win. Things I liked about it was the 60 degree bolt throw, externally adjustable trigger, and how it shot. Biggest detractor from it for me was the three round single stack detachable magazine. I prefer blind magazines the best and like hinged floor plates a close second. Detachable magazines are dead last on my list.

My friend bought that exact gun last year and it is a great rifle for the money. His shoots 3/4" 5 shot groups with Hornady ammo. It made me go and buy a T/C Ikon there next model up and I love it.

Great rifles for the price. I bought a venture in 223 last year and what a shooter. I like it so much I just picked up a 243 venture on Monday and got it setup with a Buris fullifield II scope. Took out last night and you could esaly cover 3 shoot groups with a nickel at 100 yd' using 100 gr sierra btsp. Ready to take it deer hunting Friday.

Have two of them. A black 270 and a weathershield/camo 308. The 270 loves the 130 grain federal fusions. Haven't got to play with the 308 yet. That's coming later this week.

What scope is on the rifle? My 308 came with a matching camo scope that was marked Thompson but after looking at it closely it said made in china so it came off. I don't know if it's a decent scope or not. I just never had any luck with cheap scopes. The money I've spent on ammo, gas and range fees could've bought several good quality scopes. I'm not sure what the bi-pod would add to the value. Around here last week one of my lgs had ventures with fluted barrels and green stocks for $425. And Thompson has a $50 rebate so $489 is probably not that bad of a price. I paid $399 for the black 270 the first or second year they were out. The 308 my son gave me for Christmas last year and I think he paid about $549 for it plus he got a rebate so that put it about $500.

After getting the responses from you guys and doing a lot of research on the net, I bought it. I can't wait untill it come off cooldown so I can take it to the range. The scope was marked Thompson but made in China so I will give it a test, if it's crap I'll replace it. Thanks for the input guys.

Just bought one in .308 about 2 weeks ago. My first bolt rifle, have AR's and a 10/22. The trigger is really nice and user adjustable. Was shooting 2-3" groups @ 200 yds and hit 1/3 clays on the first shot @ 300 yds. First day shot 60 rounds, sore shoulder. I do like the rubber inlays for better grip. Have a Redfield 4-12x40 on top. I am a bolt gun novice but a decent shot, this seems like a nice rifle for the price. The only thing that does not feel right is the safety.

Thompson

I have one in .270 and I consider it the probably the most accurate rifle I've fired. Easy under an inch with every factory load I've fired. Not picky at all with ammo, does not wonder off as barrel heats. They've gone up quite a bit but I think they are GREAT. The trigger is also very very good. Maybe too good for hunting. I'd say mine 3lbs. or less.
