Hi all,

I purchased a semi auto Thompson a while back. Kahr said the barrel was 16" in legnth to conform to a "rifle" classification.

Now, I see they are offered witha shorter barrel.

Has there been a change in law? could my gun be modified to a shorter
barrel?
Thanks,
Jerry

tax stamp

So, if I bought one of the new short bareled models, I'd need a tax stamp, even though it is semi auto?
Thanks for your reply,
Jerry

Over all length of a Long Gun is minimum 26" with a barrel no less than 18" unless you purchase the tax stamp and register it as any other weapon. Which is why when you buy a shotgun with an "18'' " barrel it will measure out to 18.5" the makers want to make sure some one purchasing their gun does not get caught "short". This does not include a "pistol" made to look like a cut down rifle, (ie. AR15 pistol) they are manufactured as a handgun and licensed as such to make. Turning a long gun into a short firearm or vis versa is very federally illegal with out proper tax stamp and or permits or both for citizens.

Minimum barrel length for a (non NFA) shotgun is 18". Minimum barrel length for a (non NFA) rifle is 16". Minimum overall length is 26" in either case.

Don't think so Dave I think 18" is min for all "long guns". At least thats what it say in my ATF manual and they could'nt be wrong, could they?

Now I'm confused. Can others chime in and unconfuse this????

I beleive this is accurate.
National Firearms Act is an (A native or inhabitant of the United States) American. Federal law passed in 1934 that mandates the registration of all Title II weapons - that is, all sound suppressors or 'silencers', all fully-automatic and burst-fire firearms, all (A shoulder firearm with a long barrel and a rifled bore) rifles with a barrel length less than 16 inches (406 mm) (SBR) and (Firearm that is a double-barreled smoothbore shoulder weapon for firing shot at short ranges) shotguns with a barrel length less than 18 inches (457 mm) (SBS), shoulder fired weapons with an overall length less than 26 inches (660 mm), weapons classified as "Any Other Weapon" (AOW) and weapons classified as " destructive devices" (DD). For weapons with folding, collapsing or telescoping stocks, the overall length is measured with the stock fully extended.

It's 16 inches for rifles and 18 inches for shotguns. Kel-Tec's Sub-2000, Ruger's PC-Series, and Marlin's Camp series all have atleast 16.25in barrels and are completely legal without (the red tape).

Either your ATF manual is wrong, Or there is operator error. I think It is the operator error.........16/26" rifle, 18/26" shotty........No if and or butts about it. Overall length is with the stock at "designed use" basically fully extended. Unless of couse you live in one of those ishtty states........

Oh Yeah, bbl length is measured from the face of a closed locked bolt....Technically the actual barrel could be shorter, but I wouldn't push it. Besides most barrels extend past the bolt face.
