I'm thinking about getting into black powder, and have been reading a little about the Thompson 209x50 rifle...the thing that I liked was the fact that you could also use centerfire barrels on it also..does any one here have any experience with this rifle?..is it as good as they say?..how accurate is it..in Black powder and centerfire configurations?
Thanks in advance

it's a .50 cal muzzleloader that uses #209 shotgun primers, you can also interchange centerfire barrels made for it

Yep you can get all kinds of neat stuff for that frame. Thompson even makes a .50 cal muzzleloader pistol. The Encore is a takeoff of the contender, it's able to handle the pressures of the big cartridges due to the fact it has a wider and beefer frame. I have a T/C renagade in .50 cal and is the most accurate rifle I have ever shot. I recently purchased an Encore in 7mm mag with a bull barrel and as far as I'm concerned it's the last rifle I'll ever buy. I topped it with a leupold 3x9x40 and can shoot quarters at 100 yards. If you buy one you won't be sorry.

Also I use GOEX brand black powder. It's hard to find but it's the best. Clean your gun with blue dawn dishwashing detergent.

I've been shooting BP for quite a while, and I am familiar with the Encore in rifle and pistol configurations (my dad's). I've used the stainless Encore in .223 rifle config to make 5 shot single hole groups at 100yds. They are GREAT shooters! My dad is currently trying to find a good deal on the stainless BP barrel. Currently they run around $265 for the barrel alone-almost the price of a regular T/C BP rifle! The shotgun primers are excellent ignitors for BP, as even the best percussion caps are not as hot as centerfire primers (though musket caps come close). One other item to mention-I'd get the Encore in pistol configuration. Buying the rifle and then adding on a pistol barrel constitutes making a short barreled rifle. Buying it as a handgun you can convert back and forth (T/C won a court case about this issue).

My 209x50 has more than 6 whitetails to it's credit. I ues the Barnes 250 Gr with black sabot, & 3-50 gr. plugs. It has never failed whatsoever, instant lock time evern after 5+ hours in -20 below weather. It shoots about 2" at 100 yds- but I think it could do better. After using mine, a friend went out & bought one, he too is very satisfied.

Check out http://www.coxguns.com. Best deal I could find on the barrel. $192 for the blued 26" barrel.

Thanks Poodleshooter, that was my next question, whether or not you could convert the Encore from rifle to pistol or vice -versa, I guess I should buy the pistol version and convert it to rifle..KEWWWLLLLLL!

Check out Varmint Al's web page...he uses aftermarket "Bullberry" barrels in the Encore rifle (bullberry.com).
