Thompson contender in 35 remington

is there fix for the contender with a 14 inch 35 remington barrel. mine will not fire factory ammo reliebly ,some times it goes bang some times it wont. now if you reload once fired brass shot from the same barrel it goes bang every time . it is hit and miss on virgin brass reloads also.a friend told me this is common with the 35 remington and the contender. he claims the sholder on the 35 remington allows the shell to move foward in the conteder .I must admit the sholer looks sharper on once fired brass .

when you are shooting new brass that hasn't been fireformed the only thing controlling headspace is the extractor. I had the same problem in the 7 TCU and the problem went away when I used Federal or Remington primers for fireforming because they are softer than CCI primers. after the cases were fireformed the CCI primers worked just fine.

Try replacing your hammer spring with a new one. I used to rebuilded (replace all springs) my contenders every 2-3 months when I was competing.

tryed other primers and still no good on virgin brass ,brass needs to be fire formed first to get the sholder sharper and more angled .

Try this..

get set of feeler gages.
Set hammer to SAFE/NEUTRAL position, lower hammer
Open actioin and load a new cartridge.
close action and begin inserting single feeler gages down gap till resistance is felt, the try next gage. record the gage value.

Repeat using reloaded ammo and compare the results, the reload may show a lower dimension than the new.

Best way to try an counter, would be to use an "inertia" puller to move the bullet forward in new case to seat against the rifling. the firing would cause the case to form.

BE CAREFUL!

GOING TO SEND IT TO THOMPSON,if they can fix it to fire factory ammo 100% relieablely I'll keep it . if not I'll sell it to someone who is willing to reload for Thompsons bad design . :rolleyes:FYI the lower with any other caliber thompson barrel works fine ,the 35 rem is the only problem .

FWIW
I tried everything for my .35 in the Contender, including sending it back twice.
Sold it and bought a Rem. XP100. Never had a misfire since. BTW, my .222 barrel worked flawlessly. The only unreliable caliber that I've found in the Contender is the .35.

35 rem in contender

I had the same problem with my 35 rem contender. I changed to rem and win primers and cured the problem in my gun. There seems to be a common problem with the 35 rem and contenders. It has to do with headspacing from all that I have read on the subject. If you do a google search on the problem, there is a lot of info on the subject.
