Thompson Center Contender

First time my Contender failed to group well. Firing a .358 Bellm in a 19" barrel.

This is an early model Contender that is extremely accurate with .204 Ruger and fantastic in 7x30 Waters.

Any ideas?

It's pretty obvious that the problem isn't the Contender frame since it shoots two barrels well and one barrel not so well. Without knowing what bullets, powder, primer, etc you are using and how the ammo was assembled, it would be nearly impossible to make any suggestions. Either you have a defective barrel (not likely if it's an unmodified factory barrel) or a modified barrel that has a defect. Possibly the ammo is simply not assembled well and you have chosen the worst possible load for the barrel. You also didn't give any info on how "poorly" it was shooting and whether or not you were using a rest or shooting off hand. In fact, you've provided very little info to work with. Can you provide some further information?

Contact Mike Bellm, he's the T/C Guru. Also a pretty nice guy to talk too, he'll help you sort it out. However shooting basically a .358 Win in such a light rifle, it is going to be harder to group than your other two barrels.

I'd guess the problem is with the bullet. You need to slug the barrel and make sure you are using the right diameter bullet for the barrel. Shooting cast usually requires shooting a bullet .001" larger than the barrel size. Also, your bullet may not be hard enough. You're pushing it pretty good and this can sometimes (often times) cause a problem. I agree, call Bellem first and start there.

I'd recommend that you shoot some jacketed bullets & see if groups improve & that will at least give you a point of comparison. Cast bullets can be a bit finicky to find that exact accuracy combination.

FWIW...
