Thompson .45 Semi.....

My brother just got one of the semi-only ones in the M1 configuration. We've always liked the Thompson and now one of us has finally gotten one. Pretty great quality too. We haven't had time to shoot it yet, but will post about how it does as soon as we do. Anybody have, or had, one of these? Ever shot a full auto version? What did you think? Just curious as to how someone else thinks of one of the first, and finest subguns.

As far as comments on the weight, I think we all know how heavy this beast is!!

Is the one you got the one that accepts the drum mags or the shot sticks?

It's not the worst thing in the world. I started a thread about a week ago about drum vs stick. The pro of the shot stick model is that you can still snag tons of 20 and 30 round sticks. The disadvantage of the drum is that you can't find high cap drums easily and if you find old drums that hold 50 - 100 rounds, they aren't apt to work reliably. I would say you did well. :) I hope to get one some day.

short barrel

Does anyone know if my brother wants to get the standard barrel length for this new Thompson, 10.5" I believe, is to pay the $200 excise tax and find someone to get it on for him? Of course it would be nice to have a full auto one, but he just wants the short barrel. Anyone know? Thanks!

Drum magazines.

The semi-auto Thompsons will not accept the original drum magazines. The original SMG drums (50 and 100 round) are collectors items with the former going for $400 or so and the latter for $1200 or more. Trying to beat and cut one of those to fit the new guns has to be the height of stupidity.

Short barrel rifle

To put on a 10.5" barrel, one needs to apply to BATF for permission, pay the tax, and then find a licensed NFA weapon manufacturer to do the work.

I would forget it.

If you live in a state which allows machinegun ownership, and have no criminal record, you can buy a "real" TSMG. An original registered one will run from about $5000 to over $10,000, depending on type and condition. Plus the $200 tax, of course. Check Shotgun News for dealer ads or find a Class 3 dealer near you.

I have fired the military full auto matic Thompson M1A1 when I was in Korea. I aquired it from a Chinese PLA soldier who did not need it anymore. It shot very well in full auto provided you limited yourself to short bursts. It was a far better weapon than the issue M3A1 "grease GUN."

Why do a lot of people say that a type L drum will not fit a "27A-1?? I have a 27A-1 and I have used a 50rd drum for years. The drum is marked " Magazine type "L" Thompson Submachine Gun 50 Cartridges Cal .45 For 1928 Model Wind 9 or 11 clicks. Now this is not a WW2 mag, (that I know of) but I have had no problem using it with no modification. It is an Auto-Ordnance drum.
