A new, small shop opened up here right near my house. It's called Wayne's World of Weapons. He's a guy that mostly sells knives and travels around in flea markets. I went in to check out what he had, and he will deal in firearms, but orders them from a catalogue instead of keeping them in stock. I can get a brand new Colt Defender .45, 2 mags and whatever else comes with it, for $693.68.
He says he doesn't like the "big stores" and feels they rip people off. He is only charging me 10% over cost. Here is the price breakdown.

$561.67 - Cost
$56.15 - + 10%
$50.96 - sales tax
$15.00 - S&H
$10.00 - Call-in. Apparently it costs $10 to place an order.

$693.68

That sounds like a good deal to me and I think I'm going to go for it as soon as I get some more cash saved up. This will be my primary carry gun, too.

The "big stores" around me are charging list price of $753.00. That doesn't include sales tax either. I think this guy is pretty genuine in wanting to give people deals.
Sound like a good buy to you folks?

That sounds like a very good deal and dealer to me. A 10% profit margin is more than fair. I have no doubt that the customer pays the hidden charges (s&h, etc.) at the other stores as well, they just don't itemize them. Awfully high tax rate there though. Did your state revenooers move down there from New Yawk City?

I stole mine.

It was gently used and I got it for $599 - within a day of it being out - owner said several people "thought about it" and came back broken hearted.

It is a sweet little gun, but the Colt mags dont work for crap in it. I had at least 1 problem per mag with Colt mags.

With the Wilson Combat mags, I have virtually no problems (have not had them long, but first 180+- rounds were 100% reliable.

Wolf ammo is probably the worst along with "ashtray" type JHPs.

Also - I recomend ditching the rubber grips.

The nicest thing about it is how light it is for a 1911 (22oz) and how pleasant it is to shoot. Mine is extremely accurate - more accurate than I can shoot, but when I take my time, it really delivers.

Good luck.

Yeah, the first thing I would probably do to it is get some more grips for it. But, I don't know. This would be the first quality handgun I've owned, so it would take me a while to get used to it.

I've seen them cheaper myself, but not often. All things considered, would $529 be a decent price for one about 95% ?

After thinking about it, I decided to go for a used Defender (earlier model) for $485. I need to stay out those darn shops.
