DETROIT -- Homicide detectives are trying to determine whether the shooting death a 17-year-old Detroiter in a car on Interstate 94 was the result of road rage or if it was a random shooting.
"We don't know at this time if this was a road rage incident," said Detroit Police spokesman 2nd Deputy Chief James Tate, who said police are holding a 38-year-old St. Clair County man in the shooting death of Chris McCoy.
The suspect phoned Michigan State Police shortly after the shooting late Monday night and reported the incident on the freeway in Detroit near the Conner exit.
The suspect, who was arrested in Memphis, called the state police post in Richmond distraught over the shooting, said Michigan State Police Lt. Dan Bateman.
The suspect said that a car with five men inside it tried to run him off the road about 10:30 p.m. in Detroit and a person in that car pointed a gun at him.
He then told state police he fired his own gun at the other car and believed he had shot someone in it. McCoy died on the way to the hospital.
If you shoot someone while the car is still moving, wouldnt you be endangering everyone else on the road. The best bet is to pull over ASAP, but if there are cars around you, what are you supposed to do?
