This is probably a no-brainer

I have a practically brand new (less than 30 rounds fired) Rock Island 1911 in .45 ACP with 1 factory mag and 1 aftermarket mag.

I have a gentleman with a Ruger Security Six .357 magnum wanting to trade straight up. It is in excellent condition, passes the revolver checkout with flying colors. I would be surprised if it has had many rounds through it at all.
Serial number begins 170-7XXXX if memory serves.

Should I jump on the trade, try to just buy the Ruger outright or tell him I gotta have some cash to boot?:D

I have always regretted trading in or selling a gun. Most of the time I ended up re-buying one just like it. My vote is to buy the Ruger and hang on to the 1911. The Security Six is a fine revolver that I'm sure you will never regret.

My sentiments exactly!!

Is the SS stainless or blued? What barrel length? I recently acquired a blued, 4'' Security Six for $330 and it came with a nice leather Bianchi holster. I didn't like the oversized Pachymar grips it came with so I spent another $10 for some oversized Ruger wood grips.

It's accurate and very tough. I think its going to make a perfect woods gun.

I'm not sure what I'd do in your situation but at the end of the day you want that SS in your safe.

I'm leaning toward outright purchase myself but I think he's over-valuing the SS. I will have to work on him some more with regard to his price. I figure it should be in the $300 to $350 range but I have heard others speculate at over $400 and as high as $500. I certainly don't plan on anything nearly as high as $500.

@ Shafter, It is blued and 4" bbl. with the original wood grips. And you are right, I definitely want the gun. Just trying to figure out the best way to make sure I get it at a fair deal.

What he said!:D.....V.........

Security Sixes haven't been made in about 25 years, and it doesn't seem like they're getting any cheaper. The RIA you can still buy new just about anywhere.

Something to consider.

My $.02 worth is that it would not be a good deal for you unless you were disgusted with the Rock Island 1911 and thougt the Security Six was going to get some major collector value in the future-but then you wouldn't want to shoot it, you would want to keep it as new as possible.

I like Rugers and would like a Security Six as a shooter but I wouldn't trade a nice Rock Island 1911 for it.

Due to the fact that the Sec Six is a disappearing gun, especially in the condition you described, I'd do the trade with cash/ammo on his end. In my area, I'd say the value of a 90-95% Security Six 4" is close to $400-450. I'm thinking either $75 cash or 100 rds 38 spec target ammo/50 rounds 357 SD ammo.

I bought the Ruger with holster + 70 rds. .38 special and 50 rds .357 magnum for $325 and kept the Rock Island. I think that was a win for me.:D

Good for you. I bought a Ruger SS new back in in '83 or so. It was an OK gun and tough as nails, but it didn't shoot any better, or worse, than any of the other mid priced revolvers I have owned over the years. I first bought a RI .45 last year and I liked it so much that I bought another.

The Ruger will make a great woods/hiking gun and I am sure you will be happy with it.

In my mind that is unquestionably a good deal. I'd be willing to bet you get a lot of enjoyment out of the Ruger and when you hand it off to one of your kids they will enjoy it for a long long time too.

Excellent! Now let's see pics...
Here's mine & love it. Also have two RIA 45's & one in 22.
