This Evening I Learned What It Takes To Make Up An Arsenal

I am watching the show 20/20 about Elliott Rodger and Barbara Walters said that in the aftermath of the tragedy the police discovered a veritable arsenal in his car: three handguns and 400 rounds of ammunition. Of course nothing was mentioned about the knife that was used. All I can do is set here and shake my head.

To the average, run-of-the-mill person on the street that knows nothing about firearms in general, that may seem like an arsenal.

To those of us that know better, that's not even enough ammo to make it worth while to go to the range.

For the talking heads on screen, and in print, anything more than a single gun, or more than a single gun's worth of ammunition is an "arsenal".

Good heavens. I'd hate for them to see my car on the way to the range. Might have to call in the Federales and the Mounties just to make sure everyone feels safe. Maybe Iron Man for air support.

Okay, strictly speaking an arsenal is defined as either a collection of guns, or a place to store guns. (I looked it up). So I guess, technically, three or four guns could be called an arsenal, but the way it's traditionally been used, that just ain't right, and it makes possessing a few gun sound more dangerous.

After all, why would ANYONE need more than ONE gun? One gun will do everything.

While I don't have any illegal weapons . . . as a matter of fact, I don't even have any "black" guns -- don't own a single synthetic stocked or polymer framed firearm, I'm a steel and wood type of guy -- if news crew looked in my basement it would definitely be "film at 11" time. I have more than four.

It's what passes for news

I suppose your average beat cop with handgun, shotgun and 'patrol rifle'(which looks suspiciously like the assault rifles rednecks and gun fetishists carry) would qualify for that too.

I don't know why this report bothers all of you.
It must be fact if its reported by Elliott Rodger and Barbara Walters.
Personally I think you don't have your head buried in the sand deep enough.;)

Well, let's hope no one looks in my truck tomorrow as I just finished packing for the range. I certainly have more than 4 guns and more than 400 rounds of ammo waiting to be loaded in the morning.

Just imagine what they would say about those of us that reload when we have dozens of pounds of gun powder and thousands of cases laying around our basement...

I guess that brick of 22LR on the book shelf in the living room, and the range bag beneath it containing two revolvers is an arsenal.

Consider that an "arms locker" often has a few dozen firearms and thousands of rounds of ammo. Seems an arsenal would need to have several arms lockers worth. To me an arsenal also implies most detailed repair and manufacturing capabilities, and a vast store of spare parts.

3-4 guns should be called what it is: a minimalist battery of personal firearms.

Might just be me, or the experiences I have had, but I have always defined "arsenal" as where (military) guns were made, as well.

yes, they store guns (made there) in arsenals, too.

Military guns & ammo, for the last couple hundred years, or so have either been made by private companies, or in government arsenals.

The use of arsenal as a collection of guns is simply slang, and sloppy slang,, at that.

You can use the terms this way, guns are made in arsenals, and stored in armories. The press doesn't use them this way, but they don't live in the same world I do, about a LOT of things.
:D

I hate to be a wet blanket for a choir rant but he had the rounds in 40 loaded mags and was driving around killing people. That probably engendered an emotional response and use of the term arsenal as they were ready to go.

That being said, I go to a match with 15 or so loaded mags. I have lots of loaded mags in the house.

It was the perceived purpose of the killer's mags. When I was in a accident (kid ran a stop sign into me), the officer didn't flip out when seeing the bag of mags.

Being surprised that they didn't emphasize the knife? Oh, so what - what do you expect from the media. You will get no traction in the gun debate that he actually stabbed someone.

It's not a big deal. As far as predictors - when you get threats from a disturbed person and they have a stash of weapons that are unknown from others - that is not a good sign. Folks like us have no problem sharing that we have lots of gear and ammo. That's not a strong predictor.

Yeah, wow! Yesterday I went to the range with about 1,000 rounds of ammo and 7 guns in my car. Shot 80% of it, I guess I must be a crazed lunatic madman or something.

How is 400 rounds not enough to go to the range? Good Lord man

Not at all hard to do.

I took a brick of 22lr, so there is 500 alone. I did not shoot it all, but shot about 150 rounds of it. 2 different guns.

I also took 270 rounds of .223 for the ARs, and shot it all. 2 different ARs

I also hit up the hand trap range, and shot an entire case of shells, that's 250 rounds of 12 gauge. 2 different guns.

I also shot 65 round of .308 in load development. 1 gun.

O, and I picked up my buddy on the way and he loaded about the same amount of stuff in my truck.

You aren't crazed per se: Maybe a fitness nut to haul it, and crazy rich to shoot that much at a time. :D

My wife would say I was crazed to shoot that much at one time and she would probably be right, but then I go once a week. Can't afford to shoot that much at one time due to money and time. Also to listen to my wife one would think I was a lunatic because I have "hundreds of guns" and "several hundred thousand rounds of ammo". I don't even have 20 guns. My wife exaggerates a lot.
