Thinking of selling my NIB BHP-Capitan >>

it's such a beautiful gun but, I'm not all that interested in shooting it. Bought it new a couple of weeks ago and all I do is take it out of the case play with it (the gun that is!) then wipe it down and put it away. I'm still not convinced I should sell it but, I'm spending more and more time with my 1911's and my new 92M. Anyway, I know that BHP's are getting really scarce and I'm wondering what kind of a price tag I should put on it. It is a unique gun, especially with the beautiful rear tangent site found on the Capitans. Any help appreciated...

Sir,
With all due respect Browning Hi Powers are not scarce and really never have been.
It is your pistol and it is up to you to put a price on it.

They're everywhere...hardly! I live in central PA where everyone carries and you can't find one. I bought mine at a place that specializes in fine sporting clays, skeet and trap guns. They had two BHP's, a 40 cal Mark III and the Capitan which I bought. We have more gun shops per square inch than you can imagine and none of them had any, other than the shop I mentioned. Now, back to my original question, any suggestions on value?!?

Thanks...

What sort of question is this? If you bought it new a few weeks ago and have not shot it then sell it for what you paid for it , duh!

Come on now snappy, be nice. We all know that guns are just like cars, the moment they leave the showroom they devalue. He may be able to drop the price $50-70 and sell it but most people will buy a new gun in place of a used one if the prices are not that far apart.

Slugo, your dealer probably marked up the gun 20%, more or less. If you trade it in to a dealer, expect to get at least 20% less than you paid for it. Private sale, figure 10-15% off. Gun prices vary so much around the country I can't really give you a value but you'll most likely take a loss. Check the prices for Capitans on Gunbroker.com and Auctionarms.com.
Good luck.

Thanks burrhead, appreciate the help. I paid $499 for it plus 6% PA sales tax. On the sales boards their prices are all over the place but, none as low as $499...

You got yours for $499? Man, you got a GREAT price! I bought a Standard BHP down here in South Florida a few months ago for $550 and I thought I got an okay deal. I'd have LOVED to have gotten a Capitan.

You're right that BHPs are relatively scarce in many parts of the US. However, they can be ordered pretty easily. Seems to me that there isn't a big demand for them, so most dealers don't stock them.

Personally, I say keep the gun. Shoot it. You know you want to!

My brother got one from a pawn shop with 13 rd. mags for $350. I've seen them advertised for $750, $900 if assembled in Belgium.

Pawn shops are a source of great deals in guns as many of the pawnbrokers have no idea what they have. Today, I went into a corner pawn shop and in the case was a Brand New S&W Mod 27 FBI commemorative with wood hard case and full engraving. The price was $275 I offered $250 and tax and he said SOLD.
