Thinking of a S&W 63....

Hi folks,

I'm thinking about getting back to the .22 guns. I had a New Single Six but the gun just didn't balance right and it was a PIA to use - not much fun. I like the look of the S&W 63 3." Does anyone have this model that can comment on the balance and light weight? Thank you.

I've had a couple, but got rid of them because, for some reason, after frinig more than three cylinders of .22 it became extrememly hard to extract the fired cases.

Ironically, my Model 34 has given me much better service than the 63s ever did.
 
I've got a M-36, J-frame with adj. sights and a 3" barrel that may be the best balanced gun in the safe. It's my carry gun, fishing gun, hiking gun...guess you get the idea....38 special, but yours would be similar and I don't think you'll have a problem. BTW, to the guy who had extraction problems...a call to S&W customer service would have garnered you a free shipping label and they'd have fixed that piece in a week's time. I've had that CS experience twice in the past year...good people there at S&W...Rod (30 Cal's Dad)
 
IMHO, the only S&W M63 worth carrying home is the M63-4 5" HB 8-shot. In over 50 years of shooting I've NEVER seen the RUGER SINGLE-SIX that would not outshoot any other M63 I've ever had my hands upon.
 
My all time favorite 22 pistol, even better with the M-60 Performance Center grips.

O.K., I'm probably one of the biggest Ruger fans around here, so...........I've always looked for a SP101 in .22, but, availability has always(as well as price!) been an issue. I like a nice .22 DA gun. Dad passed down to me a nice H & R 999, 6". Great gun, but, once again, just something about a swingout cylinder. What barrel lengths are available in the 63? Finishes? I'm not that familiar with the 63 so any help would be cool. Coogs.
 
I have a 4" 63 with oversized grips,,,

The pistol itself has a square-butt,,,
And I believe the grips are factory original,,,
I've seen a few more that are stocked just like mine.

Here's a picture of it beside my nickel plated Model 34,,,
You can see the difference in grip size.

I enjoy shooting the model 34 and hit okay with it,,,
But the larger grips on the model 63 make it a true joy to shoot.

Wow...those pics are nice! :D Thanks for posting people...I'm sold on this gun and will be on the look out for one of them used. Even if I have to buy new, this one looks worth it. Thank you again.

Actually , I'm interested in the new 3" model 63 as well.....those that have shot one are they pretty accurate and reliable ? As far as hard extraction or binding problems with any rimfire Smiths....I do know you always want to eject the empties with the back of the open cylinder straight down so the powder debris doesn't get between the cylinder and the ejector as easy ! I've had this build up happen on my own K frame rimfires before and this solution helped !
 
Never actually seen one in a store yet and they have been out for a year or more. I have a 5" and like it. Plan on buying the 3" when I find one locally.
 
You can easily find/buy an original model 63 no dash with a 4" barrel.
I had 2, but just sold one because I found it too small for my large hand.
My sister uses the other one and loves it.
The older ones don't have the lock built in :)
Personally, I much prefer the older models.

They also come with pinned barrel and recessed cylinders.

I have a 63 with those target grips, I hate to use the term " love " on an inanimate object, so lets just say I'm very fond of it. Very accurate, easy to carry, easy to clean. I know I will have people throwing stones at me but here it is, My S&W 63 is more accurate than my Model 18.:D
 
M63's plentiful??? Every time I visit a gun shop, I look for a 3" Model 63. I don't want a 4" M63. This has been going on for over a year. I am not going to order one and I am not planning on buying online. If dealers can't/won't get one in, I'll keep my money. I already have the 5", and M17's, and M18 not to mention Colt revolvers in 22.
