thinking of a coach gun

Hello everyone! I am looking for some input on a coach gun
I'm looking to buy one and was wondering which ones are the best bang for ur buck?
I would like one in 20ga if possible(as my wife will also shoot it)

I have a Spanish made 12 gauge (Pioneer by Felix Sarasketa), and it is a nasty gun. I would not recommend it. Mechanically and appearance wise there is nothing wrong with the gun. It has rabbit ears cocking hammers. Once they are cocked it is very tricky and difficult to release them without firing the gun.

It is not fun to shoot, but I guess it would serve its purpose in a bad situation. :(

What make you think that a 20ga is more harsh then a 12ga?
I have new england single shots in both 12 and 20. The 20ga is a lot softer on the shoulder.

I think many enjoy the appearance of the coach gun as opposed to the practicality.

To me, the appearance is a double barrel shotgun with a very short barrel (18 & 1/2 inch to 20 inches). It could be a good home defense gun except for the safety concerns I mentioned before. I think a good pump gun would be safer and just as quick as a double barrel with double triggers. This is unless you want the appearance of the coach gun which to me includes rabbit ears.

I am not an expert on coach guns, but I do not find the one I have as very safe. It does not have a safety after you cock the hammer.

There maybe others out there which are better. A replica of a coach gun or an actual coach gun is an old style gun in my view.

I think if your spouse handled mine and attempted to shoot it she would agree. Like I said before there maybe better coach guns out their than mine.

This being said, I have a Mossberg 12 gauge (former Alabama State Highway Patrol gun) model 500 with a 20 inch barrel and 8 round capacity as my primary home defense shotgun.

If you will take my opinion, it is a much safer and a better gun over a coach gun. I can not think of any circumstace where a coach gun would be better.

Remember, a coach gun is an old classical design of what was the best at the time. It is antiquated to today's standards.

If you or your spouse wants a coach gun, then I say go for it.

Ok here is our HD guns. Hers rem 870 exp mag 20ga 7 round ext smooth bore 18 1/2 inch slug barrel! Mine win 1300 8 round ext smooth bore 20 inch slug barrel.... so like I said I'm looking for a coach gun! We have both wanted one for a long time. So let's keep this about what coach guns are the best for the money please. I also have a win 1400 win 42 .410 rem model 11 and the 2 new england single shots. She also has an old marlin bolt 12ga that was her grandfathers.

Bang for my buck ... Stoeger Silverado. FWIW, there is 0.1 lb difference in weight between the 12 ga and the 20 ga and another 0.1 lb difference between the 20 ga and the .410.

I'll echo the sentiments of others ... the coach is NOT my favorite shotgun to run rounds through ... nor is it my wife's favorite.

I would agree witht the 20 ga, even though that is not the question. In regards to the "best coach gun" I would recommend that you just go with a double barrel shotgun without the hammers. You can pick up various brands at a gun show for $200 to $400. Then take it to a gunsmith and have the barrels cut off to 18 1/2". Actually you can do this yourself if you have the tools. Basically a good hack saw and then a soldering gun for closing up the end of barrel gap.

I assume you're asking about a short barreled double with exposed hammers and two triggers -- the type of gun resurrected by the interest in cowboy shooting. Are you looking for a modern gun or an authentic old time piece? If a modern gun, they seem to come in two varieties: Those with real exposed hammers, and those with simulated hammers that serve only as cockers for guns with internal hammers.

These guns are fine for cowboy shooting; but, for self protection, the exposed hammers are just something more to get snagged should you maneuver the gun in the dark. There are historic reports of people being shot, by their own gun, because of a snagged exposed hammer.

new scopeshooter,

I have four Stoegers. A 12 gauge Uplander with 26" barrels, a 20 gauge Uplander, same length, a 12 gauge Coach Gun and a 30" Longfowler. The Longfowler has nice wood with a satin finish and matte finished metal. I really like the look. My wife bought it for me at Bass Pro during the Hunting Classic. It is a Bass Pro exclusive, so look for them there. A very 'classic' looking double. I tried for two years to kill a dove with my Coach. Cyl/cyl chokes made it a little tougher. Finally got a bird with it last year, and it's officially retired from the dove fields. I'll stick with the Uplanders choke tubes. They are great guns and there's nothing like dove hunting with a sxs double! You will LOVE it! Here's a couple pics of the Longfowler:
