looking for advise on using badger ordnance, h-s precision, or wyatts box mag and trigger guard sets. any preferences? looking to have more capacity for vermin. and finally is the cost worth the gain?

seriously, not one reply out of 29 viewed. did i somehow offend you guys. just trying to make conversation. im not new to the shooting world just new here, way to make a guy feel welcome!lol

Firstly your getting too worked up, you haven't offended anyone. I've had threads with 300+ views and no reply. You just posted this morning, people are busy, give it some time.

As to your question I've heard iffy things on HS. Badger, APA, surgeon, CDI, and Seekins are all good. I chose APA because I like their bolt knob and figured id get them both in the same trip, plus jered is a good guy to do business with. Oh FN is also coming out with dbm.

Look on the bright side:
A) You've just stumped the band.
B) I'd say that you just found an excuse to buy a new rifle.....
:)

Bluetip,
I bought a bolt action rifle for it's accuracy but don't like the top loading mag. After some research and realizing that putting a magazine on it was going to cost $300+ I decided to rethink the whole thing. I am also biased towards pistol grips. So after quite a bit of research this is where I ended up.

Savage 10, Swarovski Z6, XLR chassis, AI 308 mag (10 rounds)

You won't increase capacity, all of those mags take 5 rounds. You will have to inlet the stock for the bottom metal, but that is not really a deal-breaker if you want a detachable mag. Also take a look at Surgeon, they make detachable mags for the 700.

10 round AI mags will increase his capacity. All of the DBM i listed takes AI mags or Alpha industries mags, which are shorter than AI mags but have the same in some cases more capacity. Though lately Alpha industries has had some QC issues.

I just did this upgrade on my rem 700 308. I switched to a Bell & Carlson A2 stock and used a PTG magwell with AICS mags. The channel the bottom metal sits in has to be lengthened and the back section has to be deepened by about 3/16". Its a bit of work but it's worth it. With the PTG magwell and an AICS 5 rnd mag + shipping my order came to $201

.

I've read literally hundreds of positive reviews on the CDI bottom metal- and never seen a bad one.

For a varmint rifle, why spend hundreds more for Badger?

If you're handy with a Dremel, you can DIY the required stock mod...

I went with Badger, but it was really pricey. I also found out that Badger bottom metal doesn't go well with an H&S stock. Managed to make it all work but next time I'm going with a gunsmith, it took way too much cutting then way too much filling to make it both work and look nice. It does work though.

Also keep in mind, if you are going with Badger, or any of the systems that take AI magazines, they are about $100 a piece.

Here is my Rem 700 VLS with my wife behind the trigger.

Good equipment does tend to be pricey. Though badger is one of the highest as well as surgeon. APA's is 275$, CDI and Seekins are around 210-220$.

AI mags are usually around 70$ but they're the best precision rifle mags, the closest thing is alpha industries around 60$. Which i was recently sold on for the good reviews, until bad QC and customer complaints started appearing on the hide. So second choice tends to be a gamble.

Gave up and bought a Scout Squad

I was going to get a Badger setup for my VTR, but when I talked to my dealer and did a little research, there was about 2 hours work. Don't believe any of that drop in mess. Wasn't enough sugar for a dime, so I gave the VTR to my son and bought a M1A Scout Squad.

Well it's never drop in unless your stock is inletted for Badger DBM which the VTR isn't..in any case there is almost always going to be some inletting.

Here is my AAC SD, I went with the Surgeon Bottom Metal in a McMillan A3-5 GAP Camo stock.

I can't speak for other bottom metals, but the Surgeon is top quality.
