i dont have any blackpowder pieces but after watching a show today about buffalo bill and the old west it kinda made me want to get one. i just looked at them on the cabellas website, is there anywhere else to buy these?

I don't know anywhere cheaper. I have a pair of their 1860 .44s. It's great to open a UPS box and get guns out of it.

Here is a few for starters: Cimarron Arms,Dixie Gunworks,Midway USA,Navy Arms,Taylor&Company,Uberti USA,The Possibles Shop,Thunder Ridge Muzzleloading,Buffalo Arms,Bass Pro Shops. There is more, but that will get you started. You can watch some of the online auctions and pick up a Colt.

The last time I checked, about 2 months ago...

Prices tend to be volatile due to dollar/euro fluctuations. They range from $181 at EMF for a gun of unknown manufacture to $291 at Midway for a Uberti (remember, these are standard guns, no special finishes, etc. You can pay more...). The least expensive Pietta is $200 at Arms2Armor, although 3 others offer a $210 Pietta (watch shipping/handling prices carefully). The least expensive Uberti is $225 at S&S, with $235 at October Country and $237 at Buffalo Arms the next highest. Texas Jack's $246 gun is actually a Cimarron (Uberti) and is a good value if they have it in stock.

thanks guys, i am an absolute newbie when it comes to these things. what brand would be good to go with, i saw some colts at natchezz i think it was for around $500. i would be willing to spend a bit of a premium for a bit of collectability.

i also get a discount from midway because i have my C&R license on file with them, i can get the pietta w/brass frame for $174.99, steel frame for $199.99, and the uberti for $269.99

Uberti

If you are just starting out, get an Uberti. Get something cheaper and you might not stay in this. Getting an Uberti, not the most expensive, but I think, the best for the money, and you will not go wrong and will be able to get a better price for it when you sell it, unless you sell it to somebody who doesn't know about Uberti Quality.

The Doc is out now.

Third the Uberti.

Also, I will have to throw another option out there for holsters. Dixie's are very nice of course but for about the exact same price you can order a holster from Fall Creek Sutlers.

http://fcsutler.com/fcleather.asp

They have period correct holsters with the original stampings, white linen thread etc. Also cartridge boxes, cap boxes etc. I have holsters from both Dixie and Fall Creek and I must say the Fall Creek holsters are MUCH nicer.

Only for Colt Navy, Army and 58 Remingtons though! They don't have a Dragoon holster yet, but supposedly one is coming.

Just my $.02

Here's my rig from Fall Creek. Holster fits either the Army or Navy. Cap box (for the musket), pistol cartridge box and spare cylinder box. Also have a cartridge box for my Springfield 1861.

Oh, there are other Civil War Sutlers out there that DO sell holsters in Confederate Brown etc. for those of you of the more Southern Persuasion. ;)

+4 for Uberti, but...

I'd get the Cimarron gun; it's a Uberti, it's less expensive than Midway even with the Type 03 discount and it's had Cimarron's inspection and acceptance, a serious plus. $246 at Texas Jack, $247 at Arms to Armor.

Once you got a Colt BP you get addicted to these things :D
a 1851, Wild Bill Hickock's revolver, this is one of my favorites!
Well, if you get a 1851, you'll have to own a 1860 at one day or another...

ok you guys have me leaning towards the uberti, thanks for the links mykeal.....would it be wise to pay a bit more for the steel frame?

Steel vs brass frame

Much debate about steel vs brass frames amongst the cognizeti - it's really a personal choice thing AS LONG AS you don't abuse the gun. Brass frames are less tolerant of abuse (ie, shooting heavy, maximum loads repeatedly) than steel frames. Otherwise, what do you like? I prefer steel frames; I also like Chrysler products and Detroit Tiger baseball (Verlander is just superb), none of which means a whit to anyone else, nor should it.

With a steel frame you can then get a cartridge convertor for it you want. The Conversion cylinders should not be used in brass frames.
